Trent Briney is a 2:20 marathoner who had a good day in Feb 2004. He trained for the Olympics and did the 120-140 mile weeks for 4 trainig cycles since the trials. This guy will not be 2:12 again just because of sugery and guess what 2:12 is not the effort that it will take for top3 at NYC in 2007. Briney might as well hang them up!
Listen you IDIOT! Once somebody runs 2:12, then they're a 2:12 marathoner. It's ridiculous to say that he isn't. If you've run under 4 minutes for the mile are you not a 4 minute miler? How do you know that surgery isn't the answer? Dan Browne ran 2:23 at New York two years ago, recently had surgery and has recently run 28:37 already, a time that you HAVE never and probably COULDN'T ever run. If the only reason people ran was to make the Olympic team or the world championship team then there are millions of people all over the world running for no reason.

Don't you ever compare T.Briney to A.Culpepper, son.
Blow it out your ass
Hey if the two of them really enjoy training and running the best they can, even if they don't break 2:12 is it ok with you if they continue to run? Just checking because by this standard the rest of us knuckleheads should stop running immediately as well.
Have you ever thought for a minute that some of these guys run because they love to run and race yet know they will never run 2:06? They are just like you and me except with more talent. They train as hard as they can with the hope that they will continue to improve and maybe even pop a monster one day. Some guys just hope to make a top 10 finish at a National Championship and that would be a crowning performance. Pretty sad to think that one of these guys might reach a lifelong goal only to read that he should give running up the next day on these boards.
Sorry to hear Trent's been hurt, but hopefully the surgery will get him back to 100%. He's been a 2:12 marathon and he knows what it takes to get back to that level and what it takes to push himself to the next level. A fully recovered Trent will be a contender at the trials.
Get well soon,
Jeff

100% correct. Last time i checked you can't run 18 seconds faster per mile in the marathon on luck. You need to be in that shape to do it.
Comparison??? wrote:
The comparison had to do with Culpepper's and Briney's AGE. You are way too defensive. Did Briney run a marathon at a younger age than Culpepper? YES. No one said anything about Briney being better than Culpepper. Reading is fundamental.
You are right. Reading IS fundamental. Funny how you seem to think that the use of Culpepper was solely for the sake of age. In fact, the reference of Culpepper SPECIFICALLY would lead the reader to believe that there is a comparison involved beyond that of simply age. The fact that Culpepper was SPECIFICALLY singled out would lead one to believe that there is some sort of underlying comparison of potential between Trent and Culpepper. If this were not the case, then the poster could have said "hell, my dad ran his first marathon when he was older than Trent." Do you follow? It is called critical reading anaylsis. Thus, your clever line "Reading is fundamental" proves to be yet another worthless attempt at condescending cleverness. Good job.

I am now dumber from reading this post
Having had 2 achilles surgeries, first one on the right ankle for scarring of the peritendon, and the left one in 2004 for a partial rupture, I just gotta say that I wish Mr. Briney all the best in his recovery.
Get on the eliptical as soon as possible, within a couple of weeks! Get into Yoga as well.
Jason
HANSONS NEED TO RETIRE THE WHOLE WASTE OF MONEY THING.
