should a dog have wings?
The top 3 position at the US Marathon trials are usually in the 2:11 - 2:13 range. Deena just would not be fast enough.
She could finish in the top thirty.
those links are not really listing her rivals, her rivals would be radcliffe, noguchi, kiplagat, kidane, adere, bogolomava etc. women who can give her a race. the only american at this time who could give her a race maybe, would be lauren fleshmen, but only at 5 and 10k, no american women are really close enough to be considered her marathon rival now, de reuck beat kastor at the trials, but kastor probably just ran to qualify.
Yes if she can get in the top 3 in the race and so has the wish to run for THE UNITED STATES, good on her about time. Joan B. Ran with men I have read, had a quick mile in her also. and she was great due to that fact.
I know that this was a pretty ridiculous question, but I think is brings into question the ridiculously "slow" standard to run in the trials. I started a new thread after the hostile responses to my statement that Deena's pacer from London should not be allowed into the trials because he got beat by a girl.
"""""Let me propose this: The U.S. Olypic Trials qualifying time should always be 1 second faster than the women's world record. If you can qualify for the "elite" men's trials with a time that is slower than the girls' record, there is a problem. No wonder a lot of runner dudes get made fun of by their friends.
I used to take pride in the fact that I had never been "girled" in a race. That lasted until I was 32 years old and fading badly in a fairly major marathon. Over five miles, my splits had dropped to 5:50 per miles. What happened next still wakes me up at night----a girl passed me. It doesn't matter that she set a course record, ran a world class time, was probably on drugs, or that I was having a career worst day-----I relive the shame each day when I run. From this day forth, I proclaim the men's 'B' trials standard to be 2:15:24.
Don't you men remember the playground? If a girl smoked a guy in dodgeball, would that kid ever be allowed on the stellar dodgeball team again----NO. He would be forced to go and sit on the swings with the prissy girls and the guys who were really into home decorating.
I am getting more pissed just thinking about this.""""

If Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam can play in events on the men's PGA tour, I can't see any reason that Deena should not be allowed to run the men's trials marathon.
On the other hand, I can't think of any reason for her to want to do so.
The PGA is for the best golfers in the world. The LPGA is for the best women golfers. The men's Olympic trials are for MEN, hence the name. The two are not the same. The men's trials are not for "the best", they are for the best men.
What the hell is wrong with some of you people? Men's race is for MEN, women's race is for WOMEN. I don't care if she runs 2:04, she is a woman and should not be allowed in Men's only races.
The PGA is, to my knowledge, not a male-only tour like the LPGA is a female-only tour. Olympic teams are segregated on gender, so deal with it.
It's not a hard concept, folks.
Just saw you wrote almost the same thing above. Touche.

No chance she gets 18th. Trials will be even faster this time around, and she ain't gonna run 2:18 anywhere but Chicago or London (and I doubt even there). Top 25 could be realistic. The real question is if she will ever run faster than she just did. She has been putting up some very impressive times over the past 2 years... the question is, how long does that window stay open? What a time it's been, though.
yes, and Meg Keflezighi should be allowed in the women's race.
yes, and Meg Keflezighi should be allowed in the women's race.
Yeah I think there should be no problem with her joining in officially. However, her time would be called in to question because she would have run with a field that the women cannot supply. - In the women's trials, she would be up front alone - if she chose to 'race' it. With no one pushing her, she would not run a time that she would run in a men's trials. Therefore it is not a realistic result. Seems like an ethics question.
IF Deena wanted to break Paula's world standard, then HELL YA! let her be paced too, just like Paula - I think on the right day, on the right course, with the same pacing as Paula had, Deena can take the title.
She needs to pick her shots. Why run a questionable idea of a run, when the very important Beijing Marathon is not THAT far away, for a marathon.
I think the American system is wierd. Why have a qualifying race? Every marathon runner knows that their best marathon in their life was 'all in the day' - woke up on the right side of bed...biorythms....everything was just right.
I think the Americans should do it like the other country's. Run a certified course within a specified date at a standard of sorts and you qualify. Why blow the load in one single race on a course that everyone can blame was in:
1.)Too hot a city
2.)Too cold a city
3.)Too windy of a city
4.)Too hilly of a course
5.)Too many turns etc...
Go Deena...get a gold and world standard - I'm a fan.
Here's why Deena should run the men's trials. She is one of the best marathoners in the U.S. male or female. This is more of a product of a very weak men's distance running scene, but she is damn fast no matter what. Here is last year's top ten list in the marathon:
2:13:27 Brian Sell (Hans) WorlCh...........08/13
2:13:39 Alan Culpepper (Nik) Boston.............04/18
2:16.57 Chad Johnson (unat) Phoenix............01/09
2:17.14 Clint Verran (Hans) Austin.............02/13
2:17.32 Peter Gilmore (Ca) Boston.............04/18
2:18:13 Wynston Alberts (unat) Rome...............03/13
2:18:17 Ryan Shay (Nik) Boston.............04/18
2:18:33 Mbarak Hussein (unat) Seoul..............03/13
2:22:36 Dennis Simonaitis (Ut) Tampa..............02/06
2:22:46 Jason Lehmkuhle (unat) World Ch...........08/13
Deena would have been the 9th fastest marathoner in the U.S. last year.
A few years back there was a big stink about an ekiden in Georgia (I think) where a team in the Male (not Open) category had a female on the team and some of the other teams in that division protested. The protestors said since there were Female and Mixed divisions the Male division teams should be all men. There was a pretty good flurry of letters to the Running Journal, made for some good reading.
Maybe someone else remembers this incident and can confirm or clarify anything.
MNApologist is an ass and should be ashamed. Not because he got beat by a talented female athlete but because he is a misogynist. He thinks he’s being funny when really he's just revealing to the world his ignorance, hatred and disrespect for women. Ha..Ha..Ha..Oh I get it now. You hate women. You are so funny.
the thing to remember about deena--when comparing her to other dudes who've run or who will be running the trials--is to remember that her fastest races were all done with the aid of some dude pacing her specifically. verran at chicago. a few other guys at london.
so yes, she may have a better time then some guys (not me dammit!), but they probably ran completely different races.
go to any major marathon and try to run 2:16-2:19 pace. welcome to no man's land! trust me, i've been there. deena, because of the presence of her pacers who are often running slower than they are capable of, does not experience the enjoyment of running solo.
It would be very interesting to see what the psychological effect of having her in the race would be? I'm guessing that she would finish 18th.
Some guys would run better, and some would choose to drop out instead of fading to 2:24 and losing to her.
Wow, if someone who trained for that long and would fade to a 2 24, then they wouldn't mind losing to a the best American marathon woman. Honestly, do you run at all. I think the ego stops after the 200m event.
she will have all she can handle in the womens race, besides radcliffe, japan could have all 3 of their girls under or capable of sub 220, same with china on their home turf remember 1993 and 1997, kidane may move up to the marathon, nderba has some run left in her, russia could have acouple of runners. winning the olympic marathon is not a given for anyone in the marathon.
