* My little sister was a very good D1 soccer player, ordinary T&F athlete.
* One of my daughters was a very good T&F sprinter. Ordinary at all other physical activities.
* Two of my kids, equal talent, T&F and S&D.
* My youngest, good tennis player, good swimmer and not at that level in any T&F event.
You cannot assume good in one sport thus good 800m runner.
But none of your relatives are world class at a sport that does require endurance and explosiveness, and none, therefore, are, truly, comparable
You could have gone without any of those last 4 commas.
Anyway, I like the first reply of 2:05-2:15. My other guesses would include 25-26 200 speed and 4:55-5:15 mile ability. In other words he’s really fit and gifted but doesn’t train specifically for running.

Damn! How did those commas get there? I say 2:03-2:10, but we shall never know.

None of the relatives mentioned in my example. Some poster said his sister ... . What does explosive moments such as tennis player have to do with 800m? You still cannot prove elite tennis players by default are also good 800m runners.
You want me to detail my explosive movement relatives? I thought we were discussing 800m potential.
* One of my cousins was on youth track & field club 4 x 100m DeSean Jackson. Said cousin, outstanding explosive movement skills, ordinary 800m.
* One of my uncles played on high school football team with Warren Moon on offense. College recruits asked both my uncle and Warren Moon to switch to DB. My uncle was willing. My uncle was a D1 football player as freshman. Excellent explosive movement skills. Ordinary at 800m.
One cousin played in nba. I doubt his 800m ability. He had great explosive movement.
Two cousins played in NFL. One at running back. Great explosive movement. I know he would have been a not so good 800m runner. One at QB. Out of relatives in this post, only the QB may have been a decent 800m runner.
Stop it. You don't know what you are talking about. You cannot watch a man or women play one sport an assume greatness in another sport.
You're an idiot. My sister ran sub 3 minutes for an 800 in junior high with no training.
I think you're delusional. Everyone here either ran a sub 5 mile at 14 or knows someone who did and thinks its indicative of the general sports populace.
Novak is 36 years old and plays a sport that is quick burst running and doesn't even require the same level of fitness as soccer, although it obviously requires fitness. Im assuming that at 36 he runs a 6-6:30 mile, and that he isnt super speed based and his 800 is somewhere equivalent to that.
He doesnt really need to run faster than 6 at all, and most of his training is tennis based and he does a lot of stretching. In what world is he running a 2:20 800m
Maybe when he was younger he'd be closer to 2:30, but not at 36 and near 20 years of competing at the highest level
He's gotta be able to run a 5-minute mile. Even if he couldn't, if you told him that was the goal, he could do it 2 weeks of training. Even Chris Chavez can run a 5:20 mile.
You have no concept of what a world class athlete is. none of your relatives is even in the ball park.
I think it's actually you who has no concept of what a world class athlete is. Being the best of all time in your sport doesn't mean that you're the fittest or can run the fastest 800m, it means you have the skill to make someone opposite you look silly and slow even if they're a freak 800m athlete.
SInce when does world class athlete = talented runner. Tennis is a skill sport, im not sure how many miles the avg player is covering per game but im guessing djokovic is less than 3. Djokovic mostly travels, exercises, and plays tennis. I doubt hes in putting in 15 miles of running per week. In what world.would a 36 year old man who was never a serious track athlete run 2:10 or whatever off minimal run training lmao. Because hes world class in a skill sport?
I have no idea what Djokovic can run an 800 in… 2:10 or 3:00… but you vastly underestimate the fitness required to be a top level tennis player. I’m a strong 3.5/weak 4.0 and am in good shape. I run 3 miles most days with my 16yo and he’s in sub 5:00 (most like sub 4:45) and sub 2:10 shape… so it’s not like I have no fitness. Tennis GASSES you. Aerobically it’s so much harder than going out for a 5mile run. My legs are jello after playing singles for an hour and you’re constantly winded. These top guys are in phenomenal aerobic shape. How that translates I don’t know. But gotta give them more respect than you do. You obviously have never played competitive tennis.
My anecdote here would be UFC fighter tony ferguson. In his prime he was known as a cardio freak and would never gas in fights. Other fighters told stories how he would lap everyone during their runs.
He posted several 5k runs on his social media and I remember they were like 21 minutes. And yes, this guy is competing in a cardio intensive sport and is known to be a better runner than other mma fighters.
The point i'm making is twofold:
1: an athletes endurance for a sport isnt solely based on their run times. Specific cardio is a real thing and there are jiujitsu guys who rarely run but can roll for 2 hours where a runner might gas quickly.
2: just because someone is world class in their sport doesnt mean they can crank out a good mile or 800m. It's more likely they are a decent runner and have excellent specific cardio for their sport, as well as the ability to be efficient within their sport
