Look, these filter vendors all use the same lists. Lists are updated daily and ftp'd to the servers at remote sites. It probably got on one lists, and then was disseminated out to all their clients. It's not like each business/school/university has some guy sitting around looking for porn or running sites and placing them on banned lists.

Most of these products use squid or some variant.

Yes Mr Quayle is right, you get placed on one banned list, or get banned by a major entity and you'll lose a lot of traffic (i think we've been down about 15%).

Broadwing does a lot of the behind scenes work for many of the major ISPs. Cornell uses them to get on the internet. We were on the Broadwing blacklist. It took us 3 or 4 days to get off as our provider could only contact certain people during business hours.

Qwest was banned as well. I got off the phone with them. The guy was looking into it and said something about "Broadwing". So even though they are out West, they use Broadwing as well.

So hopefully everyone will be back on soon.

Finally back on, its only been like... a week and a half. Gotta say, I missed the site while I couldn't get on.

Thank you for getting banned for two weeks. I finally got my life back. It is amazing how much more stuff I got done. Now that I can get Letsrun again, my life will go back down the toilet as I aimlessly waste vast quantities of time responding to trivial threads that are gone and long forgotten moments after they appear.

I have verizon, and just got back on after 1-2 weeks down.

No, they can trace the inbound and outbound tcp communications to your work station. If the IT guys are not asleep at the wheel, they would have a packet sniffer log any suspicious network traffic and alert them. The next day, you will be asked to see HR and those logs will be on his/her desk and you will be escorted out of the building by security.

What exactly does Broadwing do?

Banned? Seems weird to me. I don't buy the "banned" excuse. An entire Telco carrier bans one site? Sounds to me like Lets Run was having a DNS issue. An ISP might have cached the wrong IP address (this could have been a result of something the webmaster did, too.)

DNS caching would have this more wide spread affect than site "banning," which would have to be an active thing for an end user to do. This seems especially so if setting up a proxy thru another ISP allowed you to find Lets Run. An improper DNS entry would eventually be cached by the entire internet if not caught and changed in time.

Telco's (Verizon, Qwest, Broadwing, SBC) don't ban one site. Or any site. They provide internet pipes. And even if Lets run was banned as a "sports" web site, don't you think that sites like ESPN or CBS-Sportsline would fall into this catagory if sports sites were indeed banned? The fallout would have made the 6:00 news.

What do I know?

As a side note, I'm amazed at how technically un-savvy the Lets Run reader base is. "major centers"? "what does broadwing do?" I must be the only runner with a computer related job.
