I think the biggest mistake is starting at the mile. My 3 year old son ran 37.1 for the 100 meters in an organized track meet this summer. You have to work on the speed first, then move them up at age 6 or so

Took my 3 yr old out and she cruised 16:05, with rabbits.
I'm really pissed though as she really let up the last 50 meters when she had the race well in hand, was actually waving to the crowd. But considering she was boxed most of the race I think it was a good effort. She clearly has to work on race tactics.

I started to give my 3 year old some Kenyan fruit punch (aka EPO) and he went from 18:08 to 14:34 in the mile in less than a month. The stuff works.

My 2 1/2 year old nephew was on pace to run a sub 13:00 mile but 150 meters in he got distracted by a couple of squirrels running up a tree and watched them for about 5 minutes. He picked up the pace again after the squirrels were no longer in sight and made it another 50 meters before he noticed some dried up worms that had baked on the track. After another 5 minutes or so he completely lost interest in the worms and running another 3 1/2 laps and proceeded to walk across the infield. I tried to explain to him that he was going to lose his top 50 national ranking for promising toddlers and that no division I coach would even think of recruiting him now. My nephew just made some b.s. excuse about how he was bored and wanted to go home and watch Winnie the Pooh.
I need to sit him down and lecture him on the importance of having mental focus during this crucial period of his athletic development. Nothing is going to keep me (oops, I mean him) from going to the Olympics and gaining a mega shoe contract.
The problem with Toddler girls is that many of them are quite good at that age, but can't seem to handle the hormonal changes that occur with toilet training. Antidiuretic hormone manipulation may be the key.
I know of cases where the 2 year olds looked to be world beaters, then off came the huggies, on went the training pants and suddenly they lose all interest. Next thing you know, they're stuck in front of the TV watching Sesame Street and other such trash and their short illustrious careers are over.
Obviously in addition to vamping up the milage, you should consider putting on her diet, so taking away the ice cream and most everything else is just what the doctor ordered for that elusive PR. You must be kidding, right? Please tell me your 3 year old is NOT running around a freakin track. Good lord. I wonder what DSS would say to this? The most this kid should be running is around a nice grassy playground with the other kiddies.
