Mate that is fast for a 15 year old girl. Mind you I saw a 16/17 year old girl run 1:17 for the half once and never improved, apparently triathlon persuaded her to switch and she just went backwards.

OK so a bit of background. Keely Small has been a cross country phenom since she was younger - like 9-10. Top 2 at nationals - there was a Sydney girl she always tussled with. She is from Canberra, and the story goes that she was talent spotted when younger and has been training at the Australian Institute of Sport since about 10.

Interesting, there are the odd white/European girls that run phenomenally as teenagers but then they bulk-up @ circa 18-19. I hope not in this case.

I can't say what sort of mileage she's been on since young, but the 800 times are a surprise. I'd have expected her to be more of a 1500-3km runner.
Even if she has been training more like an adult, I can't see why her times won't continue to drop. I'm sure she can improve her 400 time, for example. In fact, to drop her 800 time, that's what she would need to focus on. Her 400 to 800 conversion is very good.
In that 2.01 race on the weekend, Keely knocked off the National senior champion. She also knocked 0.3 off the National U18 record. It was held be Georgie Clarke, who still holds the Australian U16 record - 2.02.49 as a 14yo. Georgie never got any better though - suffered years of injuries after her phenomenal times at 14-16. She ran a 4.06 1500 when aged 15.

Can someone name me a USA teen phenom female distance runner who went on to become an international star? Seems like if you are really good as a teen you are doooooomed.
I know it's different with sprinters, but Suzy favor is the only one I can think of...that's probably because I knew about her because I lived in Wisconsin. She wasn't running close to he times these recent ladies are though. There's so many stars who go on to fizzle.
Yes I know that's fast for her age, that's why I was surprised she didn't LOOK like a 20 year old.

Keely has posted excellent 400m times this season so we knew she would go well in the 800m - but not this fast.
Same age group is Melany Smart (WA) just ran 9:17 3km. Both are running 1500m at nationals.
