      • Jesuit is obviously a private school. NC is not what anyone but the OP would call a "prep school", implying private. It's just a high school as far as I can tell.

        Private schools usually have far less restrictive rules on this sort of thing.

      • You're taking it a little too far here. These coaches are still respectable men and would never solicitate the way you're describing it.
        For how successful this program has been I'm surprised nothing like this has been reported earlier.

      • But how many times is it actually reported? I know for a fact all the GSL schools perform some method of recruiting. But to be so blunt that you are caught is pretty bad.

      • Perhaps they were only "caught" because of the success they were having. No one is going to pay extra attention to how a last place team operates its program.

        This was an open enrollment district. Are they not allowed to talk to potential students? Great Oak does the same thing right?

      • Our district is open enrollment, but our school is impacted (full). You can not transfer into Great Oak really at all. If you buy a house in our boundaries you might get in, depending on when you buy. If it is late and we are full, they will send you to Temecula Valley High School.

        There has never been a point in my career that I have sent out promotional materials to elementary or middle school athletes for our high school. I contact them after they graduate from middle school and enroll at GO just like I would assume all my peers do.

        After talking with a former athlete from NC it sounds like a recent rule change has effected what they were allowed to do before but are no longer. Not sure of rules in Washington.

        I am vehemently against high school coaches recruiting and have lost many championships in my career to coaches that do just that.

      • My impression of Coach Knight, having been to the Tracey Walters XC meet a few times is that he is a respectable person who does things the right way and treats people well. I'm not HS coach, but have coached NCAA and my kids ran on teams that went to the meet, so happening to be sitting across the street drinking coffee, I wandered over to chat with him as he (and his wife) were setting up the meet hours before it began, unpaid and unthanked.

        In Califiornia public and private schools all must follow the CIF rules (state) and section rules. In my league coaches are prohibited contact with freshman until the first day of school. That is more restrictive than public schools which can contact once enrolled in the school.

      • From what I've heard, they are in the same school district as Shadle Park and Rogers HS. Shadle is sometimes half decent, Rogers is bad. They get most of the good kids to transfer to a middle school that feeds to NC and they are good to go. Also, I saw that Len Long retired yesterday after all of this happened.

        Does mean that in your league, freshmen can do no organized running before the start of the school year?

      • Even the team that is caught is getting less than a slap on the wrist. No one is fired. No post season ban. The penalty is a joke.

      • This is going on at my alma mater with the girls soccer team. The coach has recruited girls from other 15+ towns in the area, absolute BS. The athletic director turns a blind eye because the soccer coach is the vice principal as well. If anyone on here knows workers within the MIAA, let me know and I'll email you.
