      • Well gang today i am 11 weeks post-op.

        I would say I am 90-95% healed for my AP and 100% in the adductor region.
        I am out of here to go live my life. I fully intended to update until week 12 because that is what Meyers said for full recovery.

        I guess Surf can put me in his category of failures....

        In reality I had a serious injury (meyers said a 10 of 10) and I was hurt 4.5 years and out of shape. So I know personally that this surgery can get you back as far as living. I do not know about competing because that is not where my life is now. I can walk 7 miles no problem...I can run sprints when my knee lets me.....I can do yardwork for 5-8 hours.....I can lift weights.....I can ride in a car long distances now....Most important to me is that I can concentrate on a task without thinking about my leg pain (compartment syndrome)...I never did have moments of no pain...Mine was 24/7...365...


        My point is that if your specialist suggests surgery it is not a coin toss....It is not a huge gamble. The odds are on your side......If you want to you can play sports again if that is your goal. Your body is meant to heal. It wants to heal. This surgery puts your pelvic floor in position to heal. I am proof of that. I made zero progress prior and leaps and bounds after. That tells me Meyers put me together but i healed me. The power is in all of us to do the best we can with what we have. I had underlying imbalances...lots of them..

        Groin pain - GONE
        Hip pain - GONE
        Testicle pain - GONE
        Pubic pain - GONE
        calf pain extreme - GONE
        SI joint pain - GONE
        buttock pain - GONE
        opposite side back weakness/tightness - 85% GONE and improving

        So if this was considered a failure and a huge gamble then i will take it.....It has allowed me to live again.
        I do not think I was anything special or a miracle at all. I just think that I was one of Meyers 96%....

        If I could get 96% odds on most things in life I would be thrilled. To me the real gamble is not doing anything about it or not knowing what is wrong. In this day and age of technology that is just plain dumb.

        I am also very tired of this being a place to argue instead of a positive one to heal. It is most of the time and I appreciate all who have contributed real experiences.

        I know I would be further along had it not been for my knee and heel injuries. 1 I had prior to surgery (foot) and the other injured at week 5.

        I am now going to concentrate on healing the knee. While healing 3 injuries sometimes I have to do things that hurt the others while healing the AP.

      • A few months ago, when I read Albert's first posts here, I remarked more than once here that the seriousness of his injuries, and the length of time of his suffering with them, put him in a much more severe category than probably anybody in this entire years-long thread.

        I remarked that Albert would be crazy NOT to get surgery, and that Dr. Meyers was certainly, to me, the only person for such a comprehensive procedure.

        We've witnessed here good recovery successes by Mike in Va and MelLoDraMa. But if I were to ask, Who has seen the greatest positive change to their life from their treatment and recovery, Albert would probably have to be ranked first, like this:

        You can't rehab an inguinal hernia. You can't rehab a torn tendon. You can't rehab when you don't know what you're rehabbing. I can't believe I and others waste so much time trying to drill that into your head.

        As far as your 70 yr old friend not having other pains associated with an inguinal hernia...

        The inguinal hernia can cause nerve contact that is painful in different areas (read Mike in VA and ljp). The inguinal hernia also causes the RA to move medially, causing tension at the pubic bone and compensatory action by other muscles. These muscle issues are most likely going to show up in the athlete, not some 70 yr old man. I have an inguinal hernia. I had muscle tears in the RA and adductor. It was diagnoses as sports hernia until I saw a SPECIALIST, who said all was a result of the inguinal hernia.

        As many others have said, most of us are here for information about this injury, whether that's help identifying the symptoms, possibilities for treatment including names of doctors that can help, sharing experiences surrounding surgery for those who have gone that route and various issues related to rehabilitation.

        I know I would appreciate it if everyone limited their posts to those purposes. And I'd bet I'm not the only one who feels that way.

        My message to those of you who are befuddled by any other reader's posts or think what they are saying is off topic, not productive or otherwise ridiculous: simply ignore them. By creating new posts just to ridicule or slam someone, you add to the unproductive chatter and encourage others to respond in kind.

        Correcting misinformation that might mislead readers of this board is one thing; engaging in extended personal attacks is another. Let's just try to keep it civil, shall we?

        Yes, there's a distinct possibility I have one or even two inguinal hernias. I was earlier under the impression that treatment of an inguinal hernia was straight forward, and I think I posted some notion like that here, to you maybe. Now I've come to believe that, unfortunately, it isn't quite so simple.

        Did Dr. Muschaweck say whether yours is direct (eventually will show directly under your groin skin as a bulge, or indirect (eventually will descend through your inguinal canal into your scrotom and show as a bulge in the scrotum)?

        I'm not certain about all this, could very well be wrong.

        I think the treatment of the inguinal hernia is straightforward, the mesh/ non-mesh argument notwithstanding. Dr. M did not say if it was direct or indirect, but thinking about some of her comments I would guess that it is direct.

        I hope you are serious about seeing Dr. M when she comes next, but you know there are other options in the meantime (Meyers, et al).

        My comments on the article...

        Agree it progresses latently for a long time. Dr. M said I've probably had it for a long time. I likely discovered it only because I am active and it likely contributed to my pains. A sedentary person would not discover it for probably years more. 4 doctors, even one who knew Dr. M diagnosed me with a hernia, could not detect a hernia.

        The article says the majority of patients experience re-aggravation and that re-occurance rates are high. This is contrary to published medical articles I've read.

        That most surgeons recommend surgery as a last resort I would say is probably in general true, but they also advise to consider lifestyle situation. For a sedentary person - fine, live with it. For an active person that is limited by the problem - you may want to fix it.

        Notice that the articles says "delay surgery as long as possible." Delay is the operative word here - for the younger person it almost certainly will have to be repaired at some point. When I combine that fact with my desire to not be limited in my activities I come to the conclusion that I would rather fix it now than later and live my life as I want now.

        If u missed older posts, I'm a Dr. Meyers alum: bilat ab rectus repair and bilat adductor relase.

        To all you vets,

        Still have tight adductors but they're loosening up. I will say that the adductor pain has worsened! It's fairly localized, high up by the crease, and i feel sore any time i use the adductor. Left side is not so sore.

        I just ran 3 miles (8 min/mile) and it was ok. Glad that the pre-surgery abdominal pain is gone. too bad for the groin pain.

        Also I still have these pinching sharp pains that come sporadically on different side of my scrotum -- accompanied by black bruised patches in the center. anyone else?! Dr. Meyers said that he thinks it is related to thrombosis of small veins... I don't know about that.

        Anyway, I wanted to know if you guys have had similar issues. As well as give some post-op updates for surgery considerers. I think i made the right decision...abs are doing pretty well. But I am still worried about the adductors.

      • Yet another question from tiff to anyone who has had the AP surgery -
        I am at week 3 today and the last couple days I have felt like my abs are moving around alot - almost like they are dettached and floating around - but I don't have pain. I know this sounds nuts! Did anyone else experience that? Meyers said it is probably fluid. It makes me really nervous and I don't want to work out in case I am doing damage.

        CONGRATS to Albert!! I wish you contiued success - you have been an invaluable source of encouragement and advice!!

        Congrats also to HP - and I am glad to know that you are doing the same rehab I am b/c I was told by my PT the other day to slow way down until the tissue is healed. But - I have not even seen him yet and won't until week 4 so I wasn't sure what to do. I am going to stick w Meyers rehab for now. I am able to do everything at the 3 week marker accept for sprinting - jogging slowly is all I can handle - but I was not a runner beforeheand.

        Also - to anyone getting surgery w/ Meyers-
        although I complained that his rehab was not thorough enough, I do think Albert is right in that it is not a surgeon's job to rehab us. BUT- Meyers has been incredibly generous w/ his time and has responded to all of my many texts to him. He is very willing to help you thru the process of healing. I hope someday he gets a PT to work w/ him the way the massage therapist does - it is really helpful to know that the person you are putting your faith in understands the complexity of this injury.

      • Tiff, I agree about the rehab part. I would encourage anyone about to have Meyers surgery to ask for the rehab protocol and have a good PT review it with you WELL BEFORE you actually undergo the procedure so you know how to do all the exercises. Meyers does what he can but he's not a PT. Bringing a PT in to work with his patients like he has the massage therapist is a great idea. Until and unless he does that, being prepared ahead of time is a good strategy.

        And regarding your rehab, I would think that unless you're experiencing significant pain while working out you're probably OK. Good luck!

        Quick quick story – I’m 59 yrs-old, been playing basketball once or twice per week for many years, came down with sports hernia in February 2009 (5 mos. ago).

        Cycle of elation and despair
        I took a few weeks off any activity, then made couple of rehab attempts based on rehab protocols of Meyers and other doctors published here in LetsRun thread, but crashed and burned after brief, hope-filled, wonderful improvements each time. Elation then despair. Elation then despair.

        A stubborn paradox
        I was able to exercise very little without inflaming my left groin, testicles, adductors, with fleeting pains in my lower abdomen. But the puzzling thing was that every single day, no matter how sore or inflamed I was, I would ALWAYS, without fail, feel much, much better after my evening shower, before dinner. What a few minutes before felt like torn tendons all of the sudden would feel like perfectly good tendons. How could this be? A torn muscle all of the sudden feels perfectly fine? It must be the signaling system. The signaling system must be involved here!

        Florida rehab – a new approach
        THEORY - CONJECTURE - OPINION - ZERO CREDENTIALS
        After moving to Florida, I began a new approach to rehab on May 18 (approx. 10 weeks ago), with the goal of being able to get into and out of my car like a normal person by this coming Christmas, which would be 7 months from the beginning of this rehab project. I continue to have the ups and downs, but now I can finally discern that not only am I slowly getting better, but the rate of improvement seems to be accelerating a tiny bit. (Keeping my fingers crossed!)

        #1 rule for Surf: Avoid anything that crunches the trunk.
        #2 rule for Surf: Sports hernia is caused by a signaling problem.
        Consider sports hernia to be caused by a malfunctioning nervous system - specifically, neurotransmitter impairment. This view considers the lower abdomen, the inguinal ligament and its attached adductors to be a single complex mechanism (the pubic joint) that in healthy movement continuously writes and stores a large amount of highly complex logic (like machine-control logic in an industrial plant) to both tissue structure and nervous system. This logic in my case had been corrupted by neurotransmitter malfunction/contamination. In this perspective, a person not only has a tear or tears in tissues in the pubic joint (lower abdomen, inquinal ligament, and adductors) resulting from dangerous movement, but also has a pubic joint mechanism whose logic of movement is still in a mis-programmed or de-programmed state from past periods of neurotransmitter malfunction (that caused his injury), and whose logic of movement will remain bogus and dangerous during future athletic movements as long as the neurotransmitter contamination, and the consequent writing of further bogus movement logic, continues.

        I've constructed my personal rehab activity based on this theory. Therefore, rather than focus on repetitive movement, such as walking long distances, I’ve chosen activities that have the most varied movements as being the most crucial to my recovery. For my rehab, I’m choosing activities whose movements are highly varied, but also natural to the human animal in life or in battle. No yoga or odd movements. More like the millions of movements a body goes through in one football game or one basketball game. Millions of natural motions, yet unpredictable. Yes, I want to strengthen the muscles, but more importantly, I want to re-program all the tissues and their nerve cells, which takes millions and millions of movements, like a child learning how to stand up.

        But all of this will do no good if I continue with my degraded neurotransmitters. I will simply be re-programming my pubic joint tissues with more bogus, corrupt logic. So first I have to answer the question, Why are my neurotransmitters (chemicals used by my nervous system) being impaired to begin with?

        As discussed yesterday, it’s known that a few drops of alcohol (alcohol is NOT a neurotransmitter) swallowed by a 200 lb man will cause him to slur his speech (uncoordinated tongue) and stumble when he tries to run. Alcohol does this almost immediately by quickly disrupting the delicate balance between inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters.

        Tomorrow I hope to get time to post the results of my rehab, including what is working for me, and also what hasn’t worked.

      • Surf over the 5 years I had this I had plenty of times where I felt close to 100% with hardly any pain...and there was no rhyme or reason...I could play ball one day and feel great...another day I could be playing and fell lousy and hardly run...some days I would wake up in agony...others feeling fine...a good morning could turn into a bad afternoon...a bad morning could turn into a good afternoon...I could be hurting and start exercising and suddenly feel good and visa versa....

        As for your alcohol theory Ill kill that right now....Ive played in very competitive softball tournaments where sometimes we have 2-3 game waits....most of us will ahve a beer or 2....a rare few times I have had 3 or 4...never had a problem performing..in fact a few of my best games were "under the influence"....Ive played indoor fun tournaments that go till 4 in the morning where lots of players were drinking....and the good ones still performed

        Im guessing your neurotransmitters are misfiring cause the kinetic chain is disrupted or broken due to the injury....any good kineseologist will tell you that.....theres a lot more to it that I cant think of at the top of my head right now but something where the body stats adjsuting by sending signals around the injury...which inturns turns off the signals there, signals that tell the muscle to work start misfiring...then the muscle shuts down and on and on

        Using Meyers Rehab protocols wasnt so smart since its for surgically repaired tendons etc to regain strength and function...not for damaged or torn tendons ...probably why you started hurting after trying it.....ANOTHER REASON TO GET A FIRM DIAGNOSIS OF WHAT YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU START MESSING AROUND WITH REHAB PROTOCOLS...but Im sure you heard that one before ....Yawnnnn

        I've tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but come on man!! What possible link can a glass of coke or 10,000 have w/ a sports hernia? Some of your entries, like the one quoted above, are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO far out in left field they frustrate those of us who who are seriously here to learn and share our SH experiences.

        Even SH experts who are proponents of rehab suggest no improvement w/in a six week window leaves surgery as the only option for pain relief. By your own admission its been months. Get it checked out brother. Those of us who've been down the same road you are traveling know relief for this frickin hell spawn injury comes at the price of a knife...

        Surf you could be a valuable asset to this forum. Your passion is obvious. With that said, your continued unwillingness to take the essential first step to recovery (professional diagnosis) has really shot your credibility in the eyes of many posters. I think some posters have been unnecessarily harsh in their criticism, but even your supporters suggest ignoring you as the best option.. Not good.

        Get back in the game fella.. Both here in cyberspace and in the physical world you live in by going to see a doc..

        I agree with Surf with one thing and one thing only, and that is that this surgery is nothing you should take lightly.

        I agree with you albert when you say that your recovery from other injuries were harder (like knee-inhjuries and sholder-injuries etc) BUT this injuries location make it very frustrating.

        Even if many of you guys that have been operated by meyers have improved your condition and have less pain and are more athletic now so can it still be problems with the surgery.
        In countless studies it is proved that inguinal surgery lowers your spermcount and testosterone-levels. And from what I have seen in this thread Meyers surgery seem to be the surgery that most often result in "blue swollen scrotum and genitals" and even if it is not so bad, even if it resolves by itself after 7-8 weeks it is still not good for your fertility and testo-levels.
        I am not talking about failed surgerys now with testicular artrophys and loss of your ball(s). I am talking about maybe loss of 25% of your testolevel and spermcount.

        And please don´t get me wrong! I am gonna have this surgery myself, but I have already banked my sperms (did it last week), I have children but me and my wife may want more children.
        And if have calculated the risks and sideeffects and also the gains with the operations and for me, who suffers really bad (not as bad as Albert did but pretty bad) the answer is clear I need the operations.

        But if I would function normally in my dailly life and the only time that I had pain was when I played soccer wiyh my friends, then I would seriosly think about if it is worth it. You only have one body.

        I like to wake up in the mornings with a hard on and feel viril and masculin. BUT if this surgery will make my testis produce only 85% of the hormones that they did before then that is a risk I am willing to take in the situation I am in know. Beacuse I can´t enjoy my sexlife anyway beacause of the pain. Hope I haven´t offended anyone but I am from Europe and we talk alittle lore open about sex and problems related to that which I think is a good thing. But not to much of course!!

        To me two of the most interesting posts in this entire years-long thread at LetsRun are:

        1. Den told us that his surgeon observed during the operation that Den's conjoined tendon had widened or splayed compared to a normal person, and that the doctor has seen this in others suffering from sports hernia. This makes me realize how industrious is a young, healthy body like Den's in repairing itself.

        2. Rem told us that Dr. Muschaweck performed an operation to 2 prior surgeries by other doctors and she removed new sprouts from the end of the nerve, which had earlier been trimmed by a previous doctor, but was already re-sprouting, rebuilding itself.

        THE NERVE IN THE GROIN
        Keep in mind that the entire nervous system, including not only brain cells, but also nerves throughout the body, like the nerve at the inguinal canal, is made up of linked and networked nerve CELLS, millions of them.

        As explained by Nobel prize winner Eric Kandel in his book In Search of Memory, the miracle of intelligence of the nerve cell lies not so much in the cell itself, but in the interconnection between two cells. With one nerve cell there can be no intelligence, zero. With two cells, there can be a tiny bit of intelligence. With many nervecells, very powerful intelligence. The intelligence is stored/managed/accessed not in the cell, but in the interconnection between cells.

        The powerful logic of the nervous system, the re-growing of Rem's inguinal canal nerve branch -- all that intelligence resides in the complexity of the neurotransmission BETWEEN the thousands of nerve cells right there, and in the brain, connected to them. That's why you've always heard the word synapse. Synapses are the gaps between all the nerve cells in Rem's nerve branch. Synapses right there, and synapses (gaps) all along the nerve's route to the testicles, and also sysnapses all along the route back towards the brain.

        All those millions of little gaps (synapses) operate by one nerve cell emitting squirting little signalling molecules at the receiving nerve cell, back and forth, like a tennis game. The little squirts, like a squirt gun, need a reservoir, and so each of the millions of nerves cells has to have little reservoirs of the important chemicals, neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, melatonin, seratonin, etc.

        Also of extreme importance at the synapse is that the number of emitters and the number of receptors is constantly altered according to the situation. If one takes heroin, or any euphoric, the initial high is the most intense. The nerve cells quickly begin altering themselves, however, reducing the number of receptors at synapses for the heroin induced neurotransmitter, so that the next time the addict uses heroin, even if it's been a month since the first time, the high isn't quite as intense.

        CONJECTURE - WILD GUESS: When an athlete who has a slightly imperfect nervous system (as a young child I occasionally slurred my words rather than pronouncing them distinctly), he can still be a good athlete. But when he introduces a chemical like caffiene or heroin into his diet, it affects neurotransmitters just enough to put the highly complex movements of the pubic joint (lower abdomen, inguinal ligament, adductors) slightly off key, like music, and then it begins to wear down, like a slightly mis-aligned tire on a car. The result is not a punctured tire from a nail, but an unevenly worn tire with a couple of bad bald spots. Sports hernia is a repetive stress injury, as all the doctors seem to say.

        This worn tire (sports hernia) can eventually heal itself, with or without surger, but not if the person keeps ingesting caffeine or heroin, like a tiny pinch of sand every day into a good engine.

        Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf underwent successful sports hernia surgery on Wednesday.

        Getzlaf aggravated the injury during summer workouts and opted for surgery when the problem did not improve over time. The operation was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia. Getzlaf is expected to be ready for training camp.

        Last season, his fourth in the NHL, Getzlaf appeared in 81 games and led the Ducks with 66 assists and 91 points.

        Well said. I've arrived at that same conclusion after spending hours reading this years-long thread at LetsRun, and seeing the frustration and suffering of a significant number of people who had surgery, but later struggled with results that were not what they had expected or wanted.

        To the subset of people here who are still considering surgery, and whose everyday life is fine, and their only reason for wanting surgery is so they can play amateur sports, I can't help but point out that it would be a huge gamble with one's future happiness on earth, just so you can play your paticular amateur sport.

        There are a lot of other great sports that could probably bring plenty of excitement instead, as a substitute. Biking, hiking, jogging, mountain climbing, hang gliding, sailing, surfing, diving, hunting, flying. Maybe even racketball or tennis.

        Me? I just want to be able to live a normal life. I'm willing to say goodbye to basketball, even though I'll always miss it.

        My question to anyone that questions the riskiness of sports hernia surgery: Does the doctor you're considering require patients to sign a waiver, accepting the risk upon you the patient, instead of the doctor, before surgery? I'm guessing they do. They may advertise 96% success rate, etc., but I'll bet the risk is thrust upon the patient before surgery begins, with a legal waiver being signed.
