"Of all the Jamaicans who have competed for other countries in sport, Sanya Richards-Ross is perhaps the one received most warmly by those who wear black, green and gold in their hearts."
Richards-Ross has had three surgeries on her foot and doctors had tried to talk her out of the third one, but she "wanted to give it one last shot."
Richards-Ross ran a 51-second 400 in practice leading up to Pre.
Words from SRR, Justin Gatlin, Jeremy Wariner and more.
She said that lots of girls were coming up to her asking her not to retire after Rio. For the men, USA Blue won in 3:02.32 while Jeremy Wariner anchored USA Red to 2nd with the fastest split of 44.5.
If Richards-Ross wins in Rio, she'll become only the second woman ever to win back-to-back Olympic 400 gold.
World leader Shaunae Miller and 2015 DL winner Francena McCorory are also in the field.
Carl Lewis and Sanya Richards-Ross were also inducted.
Richards-Ross had a disappointing 2015 as she didn't make Worlds in the individual 400, but says it was because of overtraining and she'll hold back in 2016.
“This year I think I over-trained. At the beginning of the year, I said, ‘Coach, I want to run faster than 48.7 this year. I want a PR.’ I was doing 1000 sit-ups a day. I started running with the boys and pushed myself really hard and felt great in practice but flat in races. We couldn’t figure it out.”
Her greatest indulgences are pizza, rum and raisin ice cream and Skittles. The best athlete she's ever seen is Mozambique's former Olympic 800 champ Maria Mutola.
“I’m always evolving. This year I feel like I have a different perspective. This may be my last Olympics. … I’m motivated to leave my sport on top. … It’s a different place to be in.
