Lapping a couple (who probably didn't know he was the leader) on the looped course, he heard them whisper "I bet he was a great runner when he was young." Carpenter response as he went on by, "I still am."
Since his surprise win, Miller has set a couple ultra CRs and has more races planned for the fall.

Jim Walmsley had a huge lead and was on course-record pace, but ran into some trouble getting swept up in the current at a river crossing and a taking a 3-mile wrong turn. Kaci Lickteig won the women's race and finished 14th overall.

Dave Proctor covered 161.81 miles to beat the 2004 record of 160.24. He also broke the 12-hour record along the way with 86.49 miles.
