At World XC, Cheptegei had a 7-second lead with 1000m to go, but cratered and finished 30th. Now he's a world silver medalist.
The U-20 10k champ from 2014 won by 22-seconds as Stephen Kiprotich was 5th. Teen Mercyline Chelangat won the women's race.
1991 was the last time a runner from somewhere besides Kenya or Ethiopia won the men's junior race, but Uganda's world junior 10,000 champ Joshua Cheptegei could break that streak this year.
Highlights included a close 3-way battle in the 10,000 where Uganda's world junior champ Joshua Cheptegei won in 29:58.70 over Kenya's Davis Kiplongat (29:59.32). Other winners included Kenya's Anthony Kiptoo in the 1500 (3:43.98) and Abrahm Kibiwot's 8:47.43 steeple. *Full Results
Medhin beat out Turkey's Euro XC champ Polat Arikan by 2-seconds with Uganda's WJ 10K champ Joshua Cheptegei a close 3rd. 2014 top steepler Jairus Birech and World 10,000 bronze medalist Paul Tanui were 5-6. In the women's race Bahrain's Ethiopian-born Mimi Belete got a surprising win over 2-time World XC champ Emily Chebet and World 5,000 silver medalist Mercy Cherono.
Also 26:52 man Bedan Karoki and Euro XC champ Polat Kemboi Arikan. Women's race has World 5000 silver medalist Mercy Cherono, 2-time World XC champ Emily Chebet and former World 10,000 champ Linet Masai.
Men's field has Dathan Ritzenhein, WJ 10,000 champ Joshua Cheptegei, Mo Ahmed and Italians Andrea Lalli and Daniele Meucci.
Kipsirio has turned his focus to XC after winning the Commonwealth Games 10,000 and Cheptegei is coming off a season where he ran 27:56 for 10,000 and won WJs.
Their hope for a 5000 medal was crushed when 17-year old world junior 10k champ, Joshua Cheptegei, didn't run because it was hot.
Angela Tenorio (ECU) was redoing the race after she successfully contested her DQ.
