Originally Houlihan wsa just going to go for sub-15 in Heusden, but as the season progressed Jerry Schumacher steadily dropped the goal which forced Shalane Flanagan to "cram fitness" to be able to pace her.
She went through 5K in 14:55 and says, “It was a lonely last 5K for me and hard to reconcile trying not to get lapped while also trying to stay on pace for the American Record."
Georgia also got a win from Kendell Williams in the heptathlon.
The current mark is 63:23 by Mbarak Hussein from 2005. Meb ran 62:29 at the RNR San Diego Half after turning 40, but the point-to-point downhill course was ineligible for records.

“Going into the race, I knew what the record was. I knew I was on pace through the 400. Once I crossed the finish line, I was just waiting for that record to come up. It was a big feeling of satisfaction.”

In 2001 Kastor ran 2:26:58 and is shooting for 2:25 this year. If she can do that she'll break Colleen de Reuck's 2:28:40 US master's record.
“We went big. I don’t race conservatively. We’d come to test our limits and we found out today where it was. ... That pace takes its toll, though. It’s another PR, so I can’t really complain. Maybe I was too aggressive; maybe a negative split would have worked out better, but I’ve no regrets. I put everything into it.”
Flanagan's training has been going well and has has included long runs form 24 to 28 miles. She said, “I will say that I am the fittest I have been in the marathon .Everything has surpassed our expectations thus far in terms of what Jerry asked me to do. Sometimes I shake my head and say, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do this,’ but I just put my head down and try. It’s amazing, when you raise the bar of expectations, you somehow just meet it if you really are motivated.”
The record is 2:19:36 by Denna Kastor from 2006. Flanagan said they chose Berlin because it's such a fast course and the weather at Chicago is a gamble.

Huddle admits that during the race she was a bit cautious as she wasn't only worried about getting the record, but about being the first American as Shannon Rowbury was in the race.
A bit overlooked, Stephanie Garcia is now 4th on the US all-time list behind Coburn, Jenny Simpson and Anna Willard as she ran 9:24 in Paris and then again in Glasgow.
