Between many injuries and being bedridden with myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) Gill has struggled a lot since the days when he was a junior world champ and YouTube star. But now he has changed a lot about his training and is on the comeback trail.
Gill says after an X-ray 3-weeks ago he was told his Olympics were over, but he's fought through the injury training "three times harder than he ever has" which has included throwing in a moon boot.
It is the best mark ever by a teenager and 11th on the all-time lists. In the shot put, Tom Walsh beat out rival Jacko Gill (21.11m to 20.23m).
That's the best throw ever by a New Zealander in New Zealand.
Gill normally trains solo in his parents' basement.
This was the first time they had competed against each other since the national championships last year. The problem is Gill competes sparingly. He was at 5 meets in 2014 compared to Walsh's 14.
Walsh won with 20.73m to Gill's 20.33m.
Julia Ratcliffe of Princeton University got 2nd in the hammer which was won by Canada's Sultana Frizzell.
Gill says his prep for Commonwealth Games is going well and he's fit and healthy.
She said it was weird to not be the center of attention at NZ Champs as the SP dual between Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill got most of the attention.
20.79m got the win as Gill only managed 19.93 after being over 20 in warmups.
"It's not very often I get a chance to compete in New Zealand and I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm just the curtain-raiser. I, like everyone else, can't wait to watch the senior men's final,"
Gill went to twitter and said the groin injury rumors won't be stopping him, ""Just so everyone knows I'm completely injury-free ... Even if I was injured I'd still be in Wellington." Last week, Gill made this bizarre video which has been viewed over 150,000 times of him training to apparently try to pscyhe out the competition. The video ends with him staring into the camera, eating a red-hot pepper
They were supposed to finally go head-to-head next week, but now Gill might not compete depending on how the injury heals.
Walsh hasn't faced Gill head-to-head since 2010 and is hoping to this year although he says it's difficult since Gill doesn't compete that often.
Up until now, the 19-year old Gil has gotten all of the publicity but the 21-year old Walsh is the national record holder despite the fact he works 3 days a week as a builder.
