The latest video interview from the IAAF features the 5-time global champ.
"In terms of fighting for our rights and varying levels of injustices in our sport, let’s also respect the different personalities and approaches. Aggressive and assertive approaches are sometimes necessary, but l do think it is important to resolve all matters, respectfully. We need each and every approach. Personally, I would be more critical of the athletes that aren’t advocating for their rights at all. But, I respect their position and approach also. I disagree, but I respect."
No big secrets here: hard work and discipline. Phillips: "I could do the same workouts as a 400m runner but then I would bound, lift weights and then go to the pool with an hour work out. I would do that every single day for nearly 14 years."
Phillips has contrasting quotes as he agrees that the contract is "ambiguous" and needs to be clarified, but then says “He [Symmonds] doctored it to make him look like the victim and make USATF look like the bad guy..." He also says Symmonds should have came to the AAC instead of the media and would have had more of a chance if he had more athletes behind him.
Phillips was definitely right about this part: “There’s always some type of conflict going on in the sport and to the outside world and it makes us look like amateurs.”
Most of them seemed to think Mo Farah and Shelly-Ann Frasery-Pryce would win.
