Super fast times, the fastest men's second half ever, the fastest debuts ever (men's and women's race) and controversy - the rabbits didn't go with Beriso when she dropped Gidey. Valencia had it all. Final Recap.

In a massive upset, Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso, who entered the race with a 2:20:48 pb from 2016, wins the 2022 Valencia Marathon in 2:14:58. She is just the third woman to break 2:15.

Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum, making his marathon debut in Valencia, just dropped a 14:00 5k from 30-35k to blow apart the race.

He hits 35k with a 15 second lead and is on pace to run 2:02:26 right now. pic.twitter.com/2JGl7w33sh

Letesenbet Gidey and Amane Beriso are LOCKED IN. Their last three 5k splits have all been 15:47.

They hit 30k in 1:35:24, which is 2:14:10 pace. If they keep running 15:47's, the world record is going to fall... pic.twitter.com/rzwcKsatR7

Kiptum now making a big move at the 1:35 mark. He's dropped Tola and is dropping Geay as well. Debut record is 2:03:34 by Getaneh Molla but Kiptum could break that today.

Men's race is heating up now. Down to three men just past 30k -- world champ Tamirat Tola, Kelvin Kiptum (58:42 half pb, making his debut), and Gabriel Geay of Tanzania (2:04:55 pb, 7th at 2022 Worlds). 2:03:09 pace through 30k.

1:19:37 through 25k for Letesenbet Gidey. 15:47 for her last 5k, 2:14:22 pace overall. She's continuing to gain on WR pace.

Everything is going to plan for her. Well, except perhaps for the fac that she still has company! Amane Beriso is still with her. pic.twitter.com/9NriarilD9

67:18 for Gidey and Beriso. They just ran 15:47 for 15k to 20k, which is the first 5k split under WR pace (15:53). Everything going to plan so far for Gidey. She's never raced beyond the half before, so every step now is uncharted territory for her.

World record hunt for Letesenbet Gidey is heating up. She just split 15:47 from 15k to 20k (WR pace is 15:53).

Hits halfway in 67:18, on pace to run 2:14:36.
Oh, and she has company. Fellow Ethiopian Amane Beriso is right with her. pic.twitter.com/zuto0QWCHc

Two Americans in the elite men's field in Valencia. Ian Butler hits 15k in 38th in 46:16, 2:10:08 pace. No split for CJ Albertson at 15k, suggesting he has dropped out.

48:03 for leading women at 15k. Surprised that Gidey still has company -- Amane Beriso is right with her. Their last 5k was 16:00; they're on 2:15:09 pace overall.

32:03 for Gidey and Beriso at 10k. They ran their second 5k in 15:55. World record pace is 15:53 per 5k so they're getting closer. 32:03 for 10k is 2:15:14 pace.

Lead group of 20 men through 5k in 14:40, which is 2:03:46 pace. A little slower than the pace organizers are targeting (they want the course record of 2:03:00), but that's still pretty quick. World champ Tamirat Tola is one of the men at the very front.

16:08 for the first 5k in women's race at Valencia Marathon. 2:16:08 marathon pace.

Letesenbet Gidey is in a large pack of mostly men, but she has another woman for company: Amane Beriso (2:20:48 pb). Reminder that Gidey's coach said the plan was to pick up pace as she goes. pic.twitter.com/sMmpsWAZw9

Reminder that world record pace for the women is 5:06/mile or 15:53 per 5k.
2:03:00 pace for the men is 4:41/mile pace and 14:34 per 5k.

We're less than 15 minutes from the start here in Valencia and the weather could not be much better for a marathon. 48 degrees Fahrenheit, 5 mph wind, cloudy. Letesenbet Gidey is expected to go for the world record of 2:14:04. How low will she go?

There was a buzz at the pre-race press conference in Valencia today and for good reason - these fields are loaded.
