Malcolm Gladwell’s Decade Records: Here Are The Top 10 Women’s Track & Field Performers of the 2010s in Every Event

By LetsRun.com
October 24, 2019

Two years ago, bestselling author/ podcast star / running geek Malcolm Gladwell went on the House of Run podcast and, as he is known to do, proposed an idea: decade records. The thinking behind it: some world records (you probably have an idea of which ones) have stood for decades and may never be broken due to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Rather than try to figure out who was on drugs and who wasn’t and playing grammatical tango with phrases like “clean world record,” why not look at records another way and organize them by decade? Afterall, within in each decade, presumably the drugs and technology shouldn’t change all that much.

Of course, this doesn’t totally solve the drugs problem (several of the athletes on the lists below have served significant doping bans since recording their performances, which were noted), but it’s an interesting way to contextualize performances and see how they compared against other performances from their own era. A 2:18 men’s marathon doesn’t mean much in the era of Vaporflys and Eliud Kipchoge, but in the 1950s it was a big f—ing deal. Likewise, Salwa Eid Naser‘s 48.14 loses some of its luster when you compare it to the doped-up women’s 400 times of the 1980s. But if you wipe the slate clean at the end of that decade, it becomes a lot more impressive.

With the 2019 track season in the books, we thought it would be cool to take Gladwell’s idea and expand it. Below, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 performers in the major women’s track & field disciplines (men’s article here) for the decade of the 2010s. Some of the marks date back to the very start of the decade, while some were set earlier this month in the World Championships in Doha. Poke around and see if you can find your favorite runner/thrower/jumper.
