Flash Recap and Results: Mary Keitany and Wilson Kipsang Win 2012 Virgin London Marathon
By LetsRun.com
April 22, 2012
Kenya's Mary Keitany became the 3rd fastest woman in history today as she won the 2012 Virgin London women's marathon in 2:18:37 thanks to sensational 67:44 last half-marathon. The 2:18:37 is a new Kenyan national record, eclipsing Catherine Ndereba's 2:18:47 that was set in 2001 in Chicago.
In the men's race, Wilson Kipsang showed that his 2:03:42 in Frankfurt was no fluke as his first world marathon major race proved to be successful as he won on 2:04:44. Kipsang was aggressive throughout as he used a 4:30 14th mile to destroy the lead men's pack which had gone through half-way in a brisk 62:12. Only two men ended up going with him, Abel Kirui and Feyisa Lelisa, and those three stayed together until mile 20. But they would pay dearly for trying to run with Kipsang who pulled away with a 4:41 21st mile.
World record holder Patrick Makau didn't make it 20km and world record holder in the half-marathon Zersenay Tadese fell off the pace before half-way and finished in 2:10:41.
