New York, September 20, 2011— After a disappointing fall during the IAAF World Championships, Morgan Uceny came back to win the Samsung Diamond League 1500-meter title last weekend. She is now ready to take on the Fifth Avenue Mile on Saturday, it was announced today by New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg.
Uceny will make her way down one of the world’s most famous thoroughfares against some tough competition. Uceny will take on an outstanding women’s field, which includes 1500-meter World Champion Jenny Simpson and two-time defending Fifth Avenue Mile champion Shannon Rowbury, along with World Championships silver medalists Sally Kipyego and Hannah England and World Championships finalists Maggie Vessey and Alysia Montano.
Uceny, 26, of Mammoth Lakes, California, won the 1500 meters at the Brussels Diamond League meet last weekend in the world-leading time of 4:00.06, securing her Diamond League title. A four-time All-American at Cornell University, Uceny also won the USA 1500-meter title and Diamond League races in Lausanne and Birmingham earlier this summer.
The Fifth Avenue Mile begins near East 80th Street and finishes at East 60th Street. The wheelchair and handcycle race will kick off the event at 9:00 a.m. After that, entrants will run in heats according to age and gender. The professional women’s race is scheduled to start at 12:50 p.m., followed by the professional men’s race at 1:05 p.m. A total prize purse of $30,000 for the men’s and women’s professional races will be offered, with the two winners finishers each receiving $5,000.
