European 5000m and 10,000m Champion Mo Farah will compete in the Prefontaine Classic 10,000m on Friday night in Hayward Field, Eugene. The 28 year old was originally entered for the 2 miles but, after discussing it with his coach Alberto Salazar, asked to switch to the 10,000m. The Portland based runner made a quick visit back to the UK last Monday to win the BUPA London 10,000 in 29:15.
Mo has a personal best of 27:28.86 set in the European 10,000m Challenge in Marseille last year. He will face a formidable line up in Eugene headed by Kenyas World 10k record holder Leonard Komon, Ethiopias Olympic silver medallist Silishe Sihine and World Half Marathon record holder Zersenay Tadesse from Eritrea. Training partner Galan Rupp (USA) will lead the US assault while fellow PACE athletes Moses Masai, Joseph Ebuya, Mark Kiptoo, Mike Kigen and Dennis Masai will also compete in one of the best quality 10,000m fields ever assembled. Five runners in the race have personal best times of sub 27 minutes. The 10 year old British Record stands at 27:18.14 by Jon Brown.
