Letsrun.com's Fans' Guide to the 2010 Oregon Relays
Are American And Collegiate Records About To Fall?

By LetsRun.com
April 30, 2010

The Oregon Relays are taking place on Friday-Saturday and the meet may result in a new American record in the 10k as well as a new collegiate or American collegiate record in the 1,500. Below we break down some of the most highly-anticipated events of the meet (listed in order of anticipation). We start with Friday's races and then proceed to Saturday's. The meet will be broadcast live for a total fee $9.95 on goducks.com from 6- 9:30 pm pacific on Friday and 11:00 am to 1:30 pm on Saturday. The HS portion of the meet will be available for free on runnerspace.com.

Please note all times listed below are Pacific Times.

7:15 pm - Men's 1,500 - Will The Collegiate Record Fall?

The men's 1,500 is the biggest race of the night. Will the Sydney Maree's collegiate record of 3:35.30 from 1981 survive? Will the American collegiate record of 3:35.84 (held by Brian Hyde and Joe Falcon) survive? The field assembled certainly is a stacked one, as all 12 competitors have run 3:42.47 or faster. Half of the elite entrants have run 3:38 or better.

But in terms of collegiate records, only three guys have a shot. Oregon's big gun is Andrew Wheating. They anchored him on the DMR at Penn and he basically jogged a 3:59 after a 55-second opening lap. In terms of PRs though, Matt Centrowitz is the fastest Duck at 3:36.92, but clearly Oregon views Wheating as the bigger gun, as he was the one to anchor at Penn. New Mexico's Lee Emmanuel, the two time NCAA indoor mile champ, is British, so if he's going to get a collegiate record, he's going to have get the big one - Maree's.

We'd love to see the record fall, but unless there are rabbits in the field that we don't know about, we feel that a lack of quality rabbits (as well as windy conditions) may kill any record attempts. The American collegiate record of 3:35.84 is pretty fast. If one were running it even-paced, they'd go through the 800 in 1:55.11, the 1k in 2:23.89 and 1200 in 2:52.67.

It looks like Oregon 800 man Travis Stanford is the rabbit. The best result we can find for him is the 1:50.56 leadoff leg he ran for Oregon at the Penn Relays last week. Clearly he can get the field through 800 on pace but he may find it difficult to make it 1k while leading at an even pace, and it would be nice to have the rabbit go that far. As a result, Stanford probably should try to get them out ahead of pace. Get the field out in 56 and then throw in a 57 so the field is 1:54-flat at the slowest - although running an even-paced 1:54 is harder than it sounds. Even if they run a 60 for the third lap, they'll come through 1,200 in 2:54. Then all Wheating needs to do is release a 41-high and he's got it.

Weather.com says the wind at 7:00 pm will be 8 mph from the WNW. At 8:00 pm, they are forecasting 6 mph winds and later in the night the wind will be coming from due West. That's not incredibly windy, but everything needs to be right for a record attempt. In our minds, they should move this race until after the 5ks as the race is schedule to go off at 7:15 pm. The good news is that the big stands in Eugene are on the West side of the track, so the more Westerly the wind, the more likely it is to be blocked by the stands.

Men's 1,500 Entrants With PRs
Matthew Centrowitz (3:36.92)
Lee Emanuel (3:37.25)
Russell Brown (3:37.32)

7:05 pm - Women's 1,500 - Sarah Bowman vs. Jemma Simpson vs. Jordan Hasay
The women's 1,500 is a high quality race. Leading the entrants is former Tennessee runner Sarah Bowman, who now runs for New Balance. This race is her outdoor opener after a fine indoor season during which she ran 4:10 and placed 8th at Worlds. She'll be challenged by British 800 Olympian Jemma Simpson, who split 2:00 last week at the Penn Relays and has run 4:10 in the past,  as well as former Baylor runner Lauren Hagans, who has a PR of 4:09.86. Simpson represents the OTC now and Hagans runs for Asics. The runner getting the biggest cheers will certainly be Oregon's Jordan Hasay. Hasay was less than super-impressive last week at Penn, as she only handed it off in 4th on the leadoff of the distance medley relay in 3:23.32 (that's 4:14 pace and Hasay has run 4:14 this year) before running a 4:22.2 for 1,500 on the anchor of the 4 x 1,500.

8:40 pm - Men's 10,000 - Who Will Race & When?

Cross Country: 37th IAAF World Championships-Senior Men

Matthew Kisorio

This race would be the top race of the meet by far, but Galen Rupp definitely isn't running it on Friday night. The Oregonian is reporting that he may run it on Saturday night and the question is who else will skip Friday's race to run Saturday. We don't get why all of the runners don't just wait until Saturday. Maybe they will. Rupp is an amazing runner but he'll need help to break the American record of 27:13.98.

Even if Rupp does run, the top entrant is 20-year-old Kenyan Matthew Kisorio, as he has personal bests of 13:02.40 and 27:15.44. In 2010, he's finished 20th at the Kenyan XC Trials and run a 61:10 half marathon in Portugal. Kenyan Simon Ndirangu, who won the Cooper River Bridge Run last month in 27:49 while defeating Tilahun Regassa, also is entered. Since winning Cooper River, Ndirangu hasn't been nearly as successful, as he was 5th at Carlsbad in the 5k before finishing 10th in the Crescent City 10k in 30:00. We can't imagine Kisorio and Ndirangu are in Oregon to run in the Oregon Relays. We imagine they are there to run against/with Rupp, so we doubt they'll race on Friday night, but if they do, please enjoy the show as they are both good runners.

7:20 pm - Women's 5,000 - Lauren Fleshman Returns?

This race may mark the return to action by former Stanford star Lauren Fleshman. Fleshman, who ran 14:58 for 5k in 2008 but failed to make the US Olympic team, barely competed last year (a 2:09 800 in August and a 16:12 in October). She leads the list of entrants in the 5,000 but she also is double entered in the Stanford 5k so it's hard to know where she'll end up. We'd bet in Oregon, as the Stanford race may be a 14:40 race, which may prove to be too hot for Fleshman in her return. Oregon indoor school record holder Nicole Blood (15:51 indors, 15:38 outdoors) is the top entrant behind Fleshman. The third seed in terms of entries is former NC State star Julia Lucas, who - like Fleshman - is making a comeback of sorts. The 15:33 5k runner only raced once last year and has so far only raced once this year - a 9:44 3k at the Preview meet in Eugene in March.

7:45pm - Bill McChesney Jr. Men's 5,000

This race has Bill McChesney's name attached to it, but the field is not loaded by any stretch of the imagination, as all of the top 5k guys are probably time trailing it in Stanford. Alec Wall, formerly of Oregon, has run 7:58 this year and Matt Downin has run 14:30 and 28:08 during his career but is now 33 and hasn't raced this year.

Saturday's Action - Will Wheating And Bowman Double Back?
There are a lot of events on Saturday, but the men's and women's 800 are the highlights from a LetsRun.com perspective. Andrew Wheating may double back to face a stacked field in the men's 800. Sarah Bowman also may double back to face a much easier 800 women's field. The women's race is scheduled for 1:05 pacific while the men will run at 1:15.
