The Tyson Gay - Usain Bolt showdown finally took place Friday night in Stockholm, Sweden and in the end, it was not a showdown but a beatdown at the DN Galan Diamond League Meet.

Tyson Gay crushed Usain Bolt, winning in 9.84 to Bolt's 9.97.

Gay got the early lead and Bolt had some ground to make up, but instead Gay if anything pulled away further. It was no contest and Bolt did let up slightly the last 10 meters, but that was not the reason he lost. Bolt was clearly second best on Friday (video of race below).

Bolt And Gay Post-Race Comments

Bolt was immediately interviewed after the race by the BBC and had this to say on his rare loss:

"It was just one of those days for me today ... I need to work on my strength because my first 30 meters is crap ... I got a good start ... but there is no power."

Bolt was gracious in the interview, laughing with Jonathan Edwards and Colin Jackson. He was full of praise for the better man on the day, Tyson Gay. He said, "Tyson was much more prepared than me. He was ready."

The champion Gay was pleased with the win, but knows there are more battles to come. Gay told Jonathan Edwards, "Deep down inside I know he wasn't 100%. I'm still looking for the day he's 100% and Asafa is on the line."  Gay did say this is an off year and Bolt's "only goal this year was to go undefeated." Thanks to Tyson Gay, that goal is gone.

The race was only the third race between Bolt and Gay at 100m. The other two? Both world records for Bolt. Bolt's 9.72 World Record run in New York and Bolt's 9.58 WR last year at the World Championships in Berlin.
