Dick Patrick Let Go By USA Today

by: LetsRun.com
December 4, 2009

LetsRun.com has learned some disappointing news. On Tuesday, famed track and field writer Dick Patrick was let go by USA Today after nearly 23.5 years of covering the sport for them. Thursday was his last day on the job.

In an email to LRC, Patrick wrote that he "loved covering the sport the past 34 years and hope(s) to be able to continue (doing so) in the future. (I) love your website and appreciate the play you gave some of my stories. (Unfortunately), it may be a while before you post any more."

Full of good humor to the very end, he added that he wished he "had the same severance package as Charlie Weis. Good thing runners are used to rough patches."

With Patrick's dismissal, the number of papers with writers who have a big focus on to track and field is limited. Off the top of our heads all we can think of is the following:

Chicago Tribune/La Times (Philip Hersh)
Denver Post (John Meyer)
San Francisco Chronicle (John Crumpacker)
The Eugene-Register Guard (Curtis Anderson and Ron Bellamy)
The Oregonian (Ken Goe and Doug Binder)
New York Times (Liz Robbins)

The Washington Post (Amy Shipley) also does a good job of covering the Olympic movement.

Editor's Addition: Gary Hill of Track and Field News wrote saying, "John Crumpacker of the San Francisco Chronicle is worthy of note as one of the few remaining newspaper guys who keeps the torch aloft for track (Indeed, back in 2000, I think it was, he gave up his prize gig as the 49er beat writer so he could go to Sydney on his own nickel)."

We also should mention that Steve Nearman of the Washington Times is a great track writer as well.
