2009 triple jump world standings have been dominated by Cubans for much of the year. Reigning world champion Yargelis Savigne (left) will enter the championships as a huge favorite.
2007 runner-up Tatyana Lebedeva will captain a Russian squad that also includes Nadezhda Alekhina, owner of the world's best mark in 2009 thanks to her performance at the Russian Championships. Alekhina's story is remarkable, as she has found the fountain of youth at age 31 to record a personal best in one of track and field's toughest events by over half a meter in 2009! She is just one of many Russian women to come through with huge marks in the 2009 Russian Championships.
Françoise Mbango Etone of Cameroon is the 2-time reigining Olympic champion, but she usually doesn't bring her best to the WCs. Many other former WC and Olympic medalists will compete, including Hrysopiyí Devetzí (Greece), Yamilé Aldama (Sudan) and Anna Pyatykh (Russia).
Cuba's Mabel Gay could make the final and medal, giving Cuba two good shots at the top.
Most likely what we'll see in Berlin is a showdown between the Russians, Savigne, and the 2008 champion Mbango Etone.
How about the Americans? The US trio of Shakeema Welsch, Erica McLain and Shani Marks lag a bit behind the best of the world, but are some of the best triple jumpers in American history.
