Ethiopian Weekend recap for April 28-29: Worku's victory headlines another successful weekend of marathons

Victories for former world 5000m bronze medallist Ayelech Worku and upcoming runner Mulu Lemma were the highlights of another successful weekend for Ethiopia's marathon runners.

In Hamburg, Germany, Worku won the race with 2:29:14. She was followed by Kenyans Rose Nyangacha (2:29:22) and Beatrice Omwanza (2:30:46). Weather conditions were almost ideal with 15° Celsius, but there was some wind in parts of the course.

"I came here to run a good time, but I didn't expect to win," said Worku after victory. "So that is fantastic for me. When I passed 40k, I knew that I may have a chance of taking the race."

In Brescia, Italy, Ethiopians Mulu Gurma and Etaferahu Tarekegne took the first two places, while Berhanu Ajama finished second in the men's race.

In the Vienna City Marathon, Martha Markos was an encouraging second, while in the Country Music Marathon in the US, Alem Ashebir finished fourth in the women's race.
