Shalane Flanagan
Sets American 5000m Record (14:44.80)

Shalane Flanagan continued her stellar 2007 season, as
she ran 14:44.80 to break drug cheat Regina Jacob's American Record of
14:45.35, at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut California on Friday, night.
After a sizzling opening 1000m (2:55 which is
14:35 pace), Flanagan continued to hot pace, following the pacemaker
and former UNC teammate Erin Donohue through the 1600 (4:40.8).
Donohue's pacemaking duties were over at 1800, and Flanagan was all
alone racing the clock over the final 2 miles. 2k was reached in 5:52.8
(2:57.8), halfway in 7:19.7, and Flanagan was comfortably ahead of
Jacob's record pace.
Flanagan reached 3k in a 2007 world leading
8:51.6 (2:58.8 for that k), but the fast opening pace and
running alone was causing her to slow. The fourth kilo was
even slower (11:52.3 (3:00.7), and Flanagan would need a 2:53 final k
to beat Jacobs record. But Flanagan was able to dig deep and max out a
fairly even kick over the final 600 (1:02 over the final 600, 68 second
pace) to come home in 14:44.80, erasing Regina Jacobs
tarnished name for the record books.
The other runners in the stellar field were no match for
Flanagan. Kim Smith dropped out, and Jen Rhines was the second runner
home, 26 seconds behind Flanagan in 15:10.8.
This marks the second time Flanagan has taken
away one of Regina Jacob's American records. The first time was at the
Reebok Boston Games in the 3k. (recap here,
the races impact on her
career here).
