US's Best To Battle World's Best at America's Largest And Most Cometitive Road 10k
2007 Peachtree To Serve As Men's Road 10k Championships

July 3, 2007 - America's largest and most competitive 10-kilometer road race, the Peachtree, is set for Atlanta tomorrow, and for the first time in years home country athletes could be in the mix for the overall victory.  That's because the event, founded and organized by the Atlanta Track Club, is hosting the USA Men's 10-K Championships.  The event also serves as the final event in the 2006/2007 Professional Road Running Organization (PRRO) race series.

"We are very excited to be hosting the USA Men’s 10 km Championship with several top Americans ready to battle the hills and heat of Atlanta," said race director Tracey Russell in an e-mail message.  "And what a perfect combination: crowning the country’s fastest 10-K male runner and celebrating our national pride on Independence Day."

Wearing bib #1 will be the newly-crowned USA 10,000m champion, Abdi Abdirahman.  His rivals for the USA title include budding marathon ace, Ryan Hall, who is particularly strong on the roads; former William & Mary star, Ed Moran; and the Hansons top man, Brian Sell.  Vying for the overall men's title will be several very strong Africans, including Ridouane Harroufi of Morocco, and Martin Irungu and Peter Kamais of Kenya.

The women's race will not be hosting the USA Championship, but American Katie McGregor is still hoping to be in the mix for the overall title.  Like Abdirahman, her key competition for the overall title will come from a strong group of Africans, led by Kenyans Pauline Wangui and Alice Timbilil.

The race has a whopping $111,300 prize money purse.  The overall male and female winners will earn $15,000, while the top eligible U.S. man will also pocket $10,000.  An American man who wins the race overall will earn $25,000 in total prize money.
