Entries for the Welcome the World 5k
road race - to be held in Holyrood Park immediately prior to the IAAF
World Cross Country Championships on Sunday 30th March - only opened
this week, but among the first to confirm her participation in the race
is New York Marathon Race Director and CEO of New York Road Runners,
Mary Wittenberg.
The former winner of the Marine Corps Marathon
(Washington) will also be joined in a starting line up that is
targeting more than 2,000 runners by UK Athletics Chairman Ed Warner.
Warner
said: "What a great way to be a part of a World Cross Country
Championships on home soil - taking part in a mass 5k around Arthur's
Seat and then coming out of the finish funnel just in time for the
Opening Ceremony. I'll be sporting the yellow and green vest of the
Fittleworth Flyers, my West Sussex running club, but I think this will
appeal to runners of all standards - not just club runners - who can
race and then watch the world's best in action."
The Welcome the
World 5k will also incorporate round two of the 2008 Stewarts Scottish
Road Racing Grand Prix which should attract a strong club turnout. The
race will be chip timed.
