Asafa Powell 9.74 WR He did it in a semifnal heat, letting up before the finish. He had a nice wind and some slight altitude, but he wasn't even trying to set the record. It's really anticlimatic to see a WR in a semi of some meet a week after he should have run fast and when he wasn't even trying to run his fastest.

Unrabbited races often produce surprises but rarely so much so in the 800. The field went out in 55 seconds giving everyone a chance. Canada's Gary Reed had the lead the entire homestretch except for the last 3 feet as Alfred Kirwa Yego edged him by .01. The entire field finished within half a second of each other as Yego got the surprise win. Yego's highest finish this year in an international race was 5th before worlds.

*Flash Quotes
The world record was soft but Defar deserves praise. Asafa Powel
ran 9.84 into a headwind, Kenenisa Bekele ran 26:46, and Blanka Vasic attempted the world record in the high jump again. Sanya Richards stayed alive in the Golden League hunt with a 49.29 world leader in the 400 (hopefully Allyson Felix is getting out of class and on the plane to Berlin as we speak). Paul Koech went sub 8 in the steeple for the 2nd time this year and defeated world champ Kipruto. (Steve Slattery of the USA set a pr) And overlooked, Sileshi Sihine went 12:50 in the 5k to get a deserved win and a fast time. 2007 has been a slow year in the distance races.

Zurich Golden League:
Encore Performances for World Champions Lagat, Jepkosgei and Jamal in Zurich The three World Champions all got convincing wins in Zurich as the Golden League got back underway less than a week after Worlds. Sanya Richards stayed in the Golden League Race (hopefully Allyson Felix will race the 400 next week to make it at least interesting) but Michelle Perry bowed out with a loss in the hurdles. Mehdi Baala, DQd at Worlds, won the 1500.

Lagat Gets Double
Tegenkamp 4th
We thought Lagat would win regardless of the pace but the other competitors gift wrapped it for Lagat, basically jogging around for 10 laps and sprinting the last 2. Eliud Kipchoge put up a brave fight down the final stretch but Lagat was too good. American Matt Tegenkamp missed a medal by .03 seconds. Somehow Craig Mottram and defending champ Ben Limo could not even stay close when the pace picked up and were 3rd to last and 2nd to last respectively, leaving Mottram grasping for answers.

In the 5k heats, All 3 Americans made the final. It looks good for Lagat's 2nd gold on Sunday as the 5k is super weak with Bekele and Sihine out.
