Bernard Lagat and his wife Gladys became parents for the first time yesterday, announcing the birth of a baby boy, Miika Kimutai Lagat.

Born in Tucson, Ariz., where the couple lives, Miika was 8 pounds 4 oz. (3.86 kg) and was 20 inches long (51 cm).

"The name Miika is Finnish," said James Templeton, Lagat's manager in an e-mail message to friends.  "Kip says Gladys has always liked Finnish names."

Lagat returns to competition at the 99th Millrose Games on Feb. 3 where he will face Kenenisa Bekele in the Wanamaker mile.
