Day 1 of the 2023 Pre Classic started and ended with a bang. Kipyegon closed in an absurd 56.59 for her final 400 to join Bernard Lagat (2007) as the only athletes to pull off the double at Worlds.

Kipyegon blasted the field over the final 200 as Diribe Welteji and Sifan Hassan rounded out the podium.

Cory McGee made the final and Faith Kipyegon ran 3:55 to drag her heat to historically fast times.

Kipyegon sprinted away from silver medalist Gudaf Tsegay to win in 3:52.96. Laura Muir took bronze as Sinclaire Johnson was the top American in 6th.

Kipyegon will try to win a record 4th global 1500 title while US champ Sinclaire Johnson will try to earn her first global medal.

Sifan Hassan and Fait Kipyegon were dominant in different ways. The Americans didn't have a great night, but in the end, two ended up making the final - the most of any country and equal to Australia for which Jessica Hull set a NR.
