Talking about stepping up to the mile, Mu said, "I'm doing the mile again; I'm back. Some people think it's kind of new.  I guess it's been a couple of years, so I guess it is kind of new.  But, I had a little taste of the mile being a freshman in high school and, I don't know, it's just good to be back."

Sifan Hassan and Fait Kipyegon were dominant in different ways. The Americans didn't have a great night, but in the end, two ended up making the final - the most of any country and equal to Australia for which Jessica Hull set a NR.

Elle Purrier turned it into a fitness test and she ended up with a 3:58.03 victory from the front as as Cory McGree (4:00.67) and Heather MacLean (4:02.09) both PRd to make the team. MacLean only got into the final on protest.

Purrier, who is the only American woman under 4:00 this year, seems like close to a lock. After her and Shannon Osiksa (4:00), it's wide-open as 10 women including Jenny Simpson have run between 4:04-4:05 this year.

Elle Purrier only ran 2:03 in the 800 on a rainy night, losing to Julia Rizk, as Emily Sisson cruised to a 14:59 win in the 5k. Plus a 19-year-old American you may have never heard of, Graham Blanks, ran 13:27 to scare Nico Young's US U20 record.

The race's length is right in the Goldilocks zone -- long enough for drama to build, short enough that the early laps can still matter -- and the tendency for most championship finals to be settled on the final lap creates maximum excitement. Five years ago, the women's 1500 was one of the best races of the US Olympic Trials, with Brenda Martinez edging Amanda Eccleston for the final spot by .03 after both women ran down reigning Trials champ Morgan Uceny in the home straight. The 2019 USA final in Des Moines was just as compelling, with Nikki Hiltz prevailing over Sinclaire Johnson and Kate Grace in a three-way kick for the third spot to Worlds.

In case you forgot who the best distance runners in the US have been over the last three years, Shelby Houlihan and Paul Chelimo offered clear reminders in the 3000-meter finals on day 1 of the 2020 USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque. In the women's race, Houlihan led the BTC women to 1-2-3 finish (and 5 of the top 6), and in the men's race, Chelimo led the Kenyan-Americans of Scott Simmons group to a 1-2-3 finish as well.

Purrier and Houlihan are both double-entered in the 1500 & 3k, while Wilson faces Rogers in a battle of World Championship medalists. Colleen Quigley, Courtney Frerichs, and Karissa Schweizer will also be in action.
