May 23, 2013

In a stunning development tonight at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, Oregon senior Jordan Hasay, the fourth fastest NCAA 10,000 runner in history, failed to advance to the NCAA finals.

The following tweet from Oregon says it all:

NCAA west: women’s 10k- Jordan Hasay finishes in the middle of the field on a hot night. She will not advance, but has 5k on Saturday.

— OregonT&F (@OregonTF) May 24, 2013

Four years ago, Hasay entered Oregon amidst a ton of hype after a phenomenal prep career. The fact that she might not even make NCAA finals as a senior is truly stunning.

The former 1,500 runner seemed to have found her niche this year in the 10,000 as she ran 32:06.64 at Payton Jordan.

It certainly was hot this evening in Austin. The women’s 10,000 was scheduled to start at 9:00 pm Central. At 10:00 pm Central time, it was still 83 degrees with71% humidity in Austin, TX. That being said, you’d think a runner who had 1:33 on the 13th qualifier in a race where the top 12 advance would easily advance.

Jordan Hasay was on top of the world at the 2011 NCAA indoors

Hasay, however, only finished 18th in 35:51.20 in race where 12th was 35:14.54.

2008 and 2012 Olympic Champs Asbel Kiprop and Taoufik Makhloufi to square off with every Olympic finalist as well as everyone ranked in top 10 in world

Press Release from Pre Classic
May 22, 2013

Eugene, Oregon – The iconic Bowerman Mile annually closes the Prefontaine Classic on the highest of notes, but this year’s finale seems destined to send Eugene’s fans into orbit. Not only is every London Olympic 1500-meter medalist confirmed, but so is each of the IAAF Diamond League’s previous winners.

It doesn’t stop there. Also confirmed are every one of the top 10 in the world as ranked by Track & Field News, as well as all 11 currently top-rated by All-Athletics.com, which combines 2012 accomplishments with current-year performances.

The Bowerman Mile is a cornerstone of the Pre Classic, the 39th edition to be held June 1. It annually holds the best men’s mile race in the world, and since 2000 has been named in honor of legendary Oregon coach and Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman.

Two Olympic 1500-meter gold medalists are among this year’s headliners. Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria stunned the world with his London gold, having never previously ranked among the world’s top 10. The 25-year-old has never raced the classic mile distance, nor any race in the U.S.

But the 2008 Olympic champ has. Asbel Kiprop of Kenya, the Beijing gold medalist, has ranked no lower in the world than No. 2 since 2008, including three No. 1 rankings. Kiprop is a Hayward Field legend, winning the Bowerman Mile three times out of four, all since 2009. Every one of his four Hayward Field performances has been sub-3:50. He was the first Diamond League winner in 2010, and is currently rated No. 1 in the world by All-Athletics.com.

Another young Kenyan in the field was last year’s best. Silas Kiplagat earned the 2012 No. 1 ranking by T&FN, after having been No. 2 in 2011 and No. 3 in 2010. He has twice raced in the Bowerman Mile, finishing as runner-up in a sub 3:50 in 2011. Kiplagat capped last year’s campaign by winning the Diamond League title.

Three Americans in the field have experienced memorable victories at Hayward Field. Matthew Centrowitz, an Oregon grad, was the 2011 NCAA champion and won the bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships. He just missed a medal in London, finishing 4th. His numerous Hayward Field victories include the 2011 USATF 1500-meter title. Centrowitz was ranked No. 5 in the world last year by T&FN.

Leo Manzano surprised many with his London silver in the 1500. None of the Texas grad’s four NCAA indoor/outdoor titles occurred in Eugene, but winning last year’s Olympic Trials 1500 did. He won his first race at Hayward Field in the 2005 Oregon Relays.

Northern Arizona grad Lopez Lomong, the Olympic flag bearer for the U.S. in Beijing, has made the World Championships final at 1500 meters and now owns the American Record in the indoor 5k at 13:07.00. He ran a scorching 3:51.21 indoors this February.

Mekonnen Gebremedhin, is Ethiopia’s 2nd fastest ever in the 1500 and the mile. He was runner-up in last year’s Bowerman Mile and was bronze medalist in last year’s World Indoor Championships and was ranked No. 3 in the world last year byT&FN. Gebremedhin is currently rated No. 3 by All-Athletics.com.

Rated No. 4 in the world is Kenya’s Bethwell Birgen, 4th in last year’s Bowerman Mile. Countryman Nixon Chepseba will be running in Eugene for the first time. The third member of Kenya’s Olympic 1500-meter team (joining Kiprop and Kiplagat), he won the 2011 Diamond League title as a 20-year-old. They are rated No. 4 and No. 5 in the world by All-Athletics.com.

While there are only three spots on the Kenyan Olympic team, the Pre Classic accepts the best in the world, with no limits by country. Also lining up will be two more from the East African powerhouse: Collins Cheboi, the 2011 All-Africa Games silver medalist, and Caleb Ndiku, winner of the 2010 World Junior Championships. As an 18-year-old Ndiku was 5th in the 2011 Bowerman Mile, running 3:49.77, the fastest ever for that age. He was 5th again last year, just ahead of Cheboi, who was 6th. All-Athletics.com currently has Cheboi No. 8 and Ndiku No. 10 in the world.

East Africa has another young entrant in Ayanleh Souleiman. Only 20 years old, he owns Djibouti’s national records in the 800, 1500, and 3000. He was 3rd in last year’s Bowerman Mile in 3:50.21, another national best. Last year’s African Championships silver medalist, he is rated No. 9 in the world by All-Athletics.com.

Abdelaati Iguider of Morocco has much more experience, earning the bronze medal in London as well as reaching the final in the 5000. His career includes a gold medal in the 2004 World Junior Championships. Last year’s World Indoor Championships gold medalist at 1500, Iguider is rated No. 11 in the world by All-Athletics.com.

Nick Willis of New Zealand was the 2008 Olympic silver medalist and won the 2005 NCAA Indoor mile while at Michigan. Ryan Gregson of Australia is a two-time winner of the Pre Classic’s International Mile.

With 15 fields announced, the Pre Classic now numbers 75 major medalists, of whom 36 own major gold medals, and more still to come. With 12 of the announced events featuring the London gold medalist, nine include a sweep of medalists, including the Bowerman Mile.

Tickets for the 39th annual edition of the Prefontaine Classic, to be held May 31-June 1 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., are available now from PreClassic.com and from 1-800-WEBFOOT. Sponsored by NIKE continuously since 1984, the Prefontaine Classic will be shown live to an international audience and by NBC Sports from 1:30 till 3:00 p.m. PT on June 1st.

The Prefontaine Classic is the longest-running outdoor invitational track and field meet in America and is part of the elite IAAF Diamond League of meets held worldwide annually. Last year’s Pre Classic presented the most 2012 Olympic gold medalists (20) of any invitational meet in the world.

Steve Prefontaine is a legend in the sport of track & field and is perhaps the most inspirational distance runner in American history. Many call him the greatest ever. He set a national high school 2-Mile record while at Coos Bay High School that lasted nearly two decades. While competing for the University of Oregon, he won national cross country championships (3) and outdoor track 3-Mile/5000-meter championships (4) every time he competed, and never lost a collegiate race at any distance. As a collegiate junior, he made the 1972 U.S. Olympic Team and nearly won an Olympic medal, finishing 4th in the 5K at the 1972 Munich Olympics, at age 22. After finishing college in 1973 and preparing for a return to the Olympics in 1976, he continued to improve, setting many American records. His life ended tragically on May 30, 1975, the result of an auto accident, at age 24. The Pre Classic began soon after and has been held every year since.

In the history of the United States, only four Americans have gone sub-4 in the mile while in high school, and only has done so in the last 36 years - Alan Webb.

The 4 Americans Who Have Gone Sub-4 Minute HS Milers
2001 – Alan Webb: 3:53.4
1967 – Marty Liquori: 3:59.8
1966 - Tim Danielson: 3:59.4
1965 – Jim Ryun: 3:55.3

*Lukas Verzbicas has a truly incredible story (now representing the US in triathlon) and ran 3:59.71 in 2011 as a student at a US high school but not as an American citizen.

Ever since last year’s adidas High School Boys Dream Mile, when a pair of juniors, Bernie Montoya of Arizona and Jacob Burchman of West Virginia, finished first and second in 4:01.32 and 4:02.73, there’s been a lot of wondering as to whether a fifth name might by added to that list this year on Saturday when the 2013 adidas High School Boys Dream mile takes place in New York.

It’s certainly a possibility as the assembled field is a very strong one as it includes Montoya (Burcham is not running this year), two high schoolers who have gone sub 4:05 in their careers in Edward Cheserek (4:02.21, the Kenyan is hoping to join the list with an asterisk * like Verzbicas as a non-American attending a US high school) and Penn Relays champ Sean McGorty (4:04.47), plus 1:47.79 800 man Andres Arroyo, 2013 indoor mile champ Henry Wynne (4:08.15, hasn’t lost a race since finishing second last year at last year’s New Balance nationals outdoors), and the top 3200 runner of the year in Ben Saarel.

Those are the six key guys that you should focus on. However, the field is full of quality and as a result we give you info on everyone entered below. We’ve bolded the six guys we think are the ones to watch and also have added in the runner’s college choices as it’s way more interesting if runner’s have allegiances that make you pull for/against them just as is the case with teams in the professional sports.

The Big Six – Do Any Have A Shot At Sub-4?

Now, let’s talk about the ‘Big six.’ Could any of them break 4:00.00?

We’ll start by saying it’s not going to be easy. There is a reason why so few high schoolers in the US have gone sub-4. It’s very hard. As good as these guys are, none of them have run 8:37 flat for 2 miles which is basically the equivalent time in the deuce according to John Kellogg’s conversion chart.

If you don’t have that type of great endurance, and it’s understandably why these guys might at their young age be better at the mile than the two-mile, then you need great speed to do it. Probably sub-1:50 speed.

With that in mind, we’ll tell you who we dont think will break-4.

1. Edward Cheserek.

You may be surprised that we are writing Cheserek off first as has obviously been the most dominant throughout his high school career but it seems like he may have peaked indoors this year when he ran 8:39.15 for the deuce as he recently was beat convincingly by Penn Relays runner-up Ben Malone at the Loucks Games, 4:09.73 to 4:11.19. We thought real hard about putting Malone in as a guy in bold as he’s very good and one of just three guys with the sub-1:50 800 pr that we’d like to see but Malone was beat convincingly by McGorty at Penn (4:04.47 to 4:05.59).

Henry Wynner en route to a New Balance Grand Prix mile win indoors

2. Henry Wynne (Stanford Advocate feature on him here)

We are big fans of Wynne’s as the kid hasn’t lost a race all year. Admittedly, he skipped Foot Lockers in the fall to get ready for track but we like guys that a) win and b) aren’t afraid to buck the system a little bit. There are just too many high profile meets for high schoolers.

That being said, he just has no times behind him that make us think a sub-4:00 is coming. At indoor nationals, his 4:08.15 narrow win over Texas’ Trevor Gilley with a 57-last 440 was impressive but if you are going to go sub-4, you’d likely be killing other high school runners in that race.

If he does go sub-4, then his lack of times are just the results of the fact that he doesn’t travel all over the country to ‘big race’ after big race which in our minds is a good thing at that age.

3. Sean McGorty

In case McGorty’s reading this, let us pump him up as we write off his chances for sub-4. Watching this guy race honestly makes us think of Steve Prefontaine. He’s fearless and just goes for it. Watch his Penn Relays 4:04 mile win embedded below, and you’ll see that he goes out in 58 with no rabbits.

A week before that he solo’d an 8:46.07 3200 in windy conditions that impressed the hell out of us. Again, very old school. There is no need to get on a plane, have rabbits and perfect conditions to run fast.

Considering he ran 4:04 from the front at Penn, he could get close to 4 in New York, but again he reminds us of Pre. Look at his 800 pb – 1:54. The mile’s not his event. He’s just not speedy enough. Since he’s going to Stanford and was the Foot Locker runner-up to Cheserek, he seems to be more in the Chris Derrick mold.

If he goes sub-4, it will be because he’s in sub-8:40 shape, but even if he does that, we don’t see him winning this race.

So we had six, and now we’ve eliminated three, so that means we have three remaining.

The Three Who We Intellectually Can Make A Case for Breaking 4

Montoya was on his game last year

1. Bernie Montoya

The Arizona legend (state record holder at 800, mile and 3200) ran 4:01.32 last year at adidas when his 800 pb was 1:52.49 and his 3200 pb was 8:48.25. Well after running an 8:47.07 for 3200 at Arcadia, he just ran a big 800 pr of 1:50.19.

He thus seems better than he was last year. If you are better than you were last year when you ran ran 4:01.32, then you’ve got a good chance.

That being said, he’s lost twice this year to Ben Saarrel, once in the 3200 at Arcadia (8:45.74 to 8:47.07) and in the mile at Mt. Sac (4:08.55 to 4:09.18).

We’re not writing Montoya off though because of those two losses. Last year, he lost at Arcadia last year to Futzum Zeinasellassie and then turned the tables on him at adidas.

2. Ben Saarel

We know he’s only seeded 9th in terms of mile prs, but times are overrated. In our minds, there is little to not like about Saarel. Yes, we’ll admit his 800/mile personal bests (1:52.64 and 4:08.55) are less than impressive for guys at this level, but have you been paying attention to what he’s been winning this spring? He won the Arcadia 3200 over Montoya as well as the Mt. Sac mile.

Can you say undefeated at 1600 and 3200 on the year?

And while his 800 pb is just 1:52.64, we know it would be much faster if he raced it more often as that PR also came at Mt. Sac where he was just .24 behind Montoya who just ran 1:50.19.

One more thing. His 1600 and 3200 times also are very misleading. He’s definitely got way more in the tank. More impressive than his wins this spring has been the way they’ve been achieved.

At Mt. Sac, he closed in 54.35 in the mile. At Arcadia, he closed in 55 in a 3200. He certainly seems to definitely be in sub 8:40 3200 shape as he also ran an 8:49 3200 at 4,500 feet of altitude.

Colorado coach Mark Wetmore is going to be a very happy man next year as he may never have had an endurance guy this good with these type of wheels.

3. Andres Arroyo

The Florida 800, 1600, 3200 champion put himself in some elite company when he ran 1:47.79 for earlier this spring, #6 all-time at the high school level. That was just a short-while after a solo 4:04.65 1600.

He’s clearly got great wheels and that’s why we’ve got him a possible sub-4. But a 4:04.65 1600 is only equal to a 4:06.13 mile. Six seconds is a lot. In fact, we bet some of the guys in this field don’t improve by six seconds in the mile for the rest of their careers.

That being said, it’s very possible that he’s much better than his 1600 and 3200 prs of 4:04.65 and 8:51.47 as he’s another guy that hasn’t traveled all over the country to race this spring.

With his 1:47 800 speed, Arroyo very well may be the guy many college coaches would want most as he might be the most talented. Because of his great speed, we are listing him as a potential sub-4 guy for Saturday. That being said, indoors he was more than six seconds back of Wynne at the New Balance Nationals. As raw of a talent this guy is, we just find it hard to believe that a guy who was 14th indoors in 4:16.04 is going sub-4 outdoors.

Predictions from LetsRun.com and our mystery High School Coach

So what happens?

We reached out to a top high school coach that we respect, Chris Catton, who coached Craig Engels to a 4:03.96 in the dream mile last year (and Catton is the only guy we know of who has coach three sub-9 guys in three straight years – Jake Hurysz 8:49 in 2010, Scott Morgan in 2011, Engels 8:55 in 2012), and asked him to rank our ‘Big Six’ in order 1-6. He came up with the following order:

1. Montoya
2. Saarel
3. Arroyo
4. McGorty
5. Cheserek
6. Wynne

That’s a good starting point for us. We agree on the top three, just not necessarily in that order. In terms of winning the race, here is our rankings of the guys with a brief justification (Note: we don’t think they’ll finish in this order (some guys like maybe Arroyo will go for it and either get it or die trying).

1. Saarel* - beaten Montoya twice this spring.
2. Montoya* - we’re nervous about picking him 2nd since he just PRd big-time at 800 and ran 4:01 last year. Maybe he should be our #1 pick.
3. Arroyo* - 1:47.79 is all we need to type.
4. Wynne - undefeated as a senior, hard to bet against that.
5. McGorty - gutsy runner might be our pick if it was a deuce.
6. Cheserek - seems to be past his peak.

* = potential sub-4.

As for whether anyone actually breaks-4, give us a day or two to think about and we’ll let you know before the race starts. We want to check the forecast. That’s probably the most important thing. Also it’s critical that the rabbiting is done correctly. If they go 56-61, then we don’t see it happening.

One Last Thought: We know a lot of people instinctively think, “A bunch of these guys have run sub 4:05- even some last year – so someone will go sub-4. But that’s not the way things work.

We don’t spend a lot of time analyzing the high school ranks but hope that a lot of high schoolers are reading this. One thing that is very hard for people to understand is that often after high school it gets a lot harder to improve a lot year by year, and it’s getting harder and harder nowadays considering many high schoolers are basically training like and racing like (ideal conditions under the lights) collegians.

In that light, we decided to look at the seniors who all ran-under 4:05 last year at this race. Surely, in college with great teammates to train with and super smart coaches, they must all be killing it and under 4, right? Far from it.

We’d say only one of them is significantly improved from last year.

Last Year’s Sub-4:05 adidas Seniors and Where They Are Now

3. Josh Lampron (4:02.98) – Villanova red-shirt has run 3:46.09 1500.
4. Brannon Kidder (4:03.12) – Penn St. frosh has run 3:59.48 indoors and 3:42.07 outdoors.
5. Marcus Dickson (4:03.18) – BYU frosh has run 3:45.63.
6. Craig Engels (4:03.96) – NC State red-shirt has run 3:45.51.
7. Ahmed Bile (4:04.11) – Georgetown frosh ran 1:51/2:26 indoors.
8. Izaic Yorks (4:04.38) – Portland frosh ran 4:06.15 indoors and 3:49.10 outdoors.
9. Brad Nye (4:04.46) – BYU frosh has run 1:52.27 and 3:52.13 in 1500.

Let’s forget about college for now. This should be one of the better high school races of the year with the possibility of a sub 4.

Who you got? Forget about our predictions, tell us here who you think will win.

May 21, 2013

We are delighted to announce that triple World Champion and 2012 Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Vivian Cheruiyot is expecting her first child later this year.

Quote from Vivian, “I am very happy to announce that I will take some time off from athletics this year as I am pregnant with my first child. I have been running for many years and at 29 feel that now is the right time to start a family. Unfortunately I will not be able to defend my World Championships 5000m and 10,000m titles in Moscow but I will be back for the 2014 season and the 2015 World T&F Championships in Beijing. I have already spoken to some of my colleagues who had babies to get advice about when to return to training after giving birth. My long term goal is the 2016 Olympic Games in Beijing and to finally win Olympic gold”.

May 21, 2013

Reigning world 5000m and 10,000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya has announced that she is pregnant with her first child and will be taking some time off from her athletics career.

“I am very happy to announce that I will take some time off from athletics this year as I am pregnant with my first child,” Cheruiyot said through a statement provided by her agent, Ricky Simms. ”I have been running for many years and at 29 feel that now is the right time to start a family. Unfortunately I will not be able to defend my World Championships 5000m and 10,000m titles in Moscow but I will be back for the 2014 season and the 2015 World T&F Championships in Beijing.”

Cheruiyot, who won the silver medal at 5000m and the bronze at 10,000m at last summer’s London Olympics, is coached by her husband, Moses. She has won two world 5000m titles and the 10,000m once, but has yet to win an Olympic gold medal. She said today that she is not done with her quest for Olympic gold.

“I have already spoken to some of my colleagues who had babies to get advice about when to return to training after giving birth,” she continued. ”My long term goal is the 2016 Olympic Games in Beijing and to finally win Olympic gold.”

In addition to her medals, Cheruiyot is the Kenyan record holder for 5000m (14:20.87) and 3000m indoors (8:30.53).

The NYRR women’s 1500 won’t have any win/loss drama up front but we’re happy with that. This race will be won by Sweden’s Abeba Aregawi. The former Ethiopian, who opened her 2013 outdoor season with a spectacular 3:56.60 in Doha, is making her US debut in this race and there is no one in this field that stands a chance of touching her barring a fall. So if you are attending, consider yourself lucky to get to watch Aregawi in person in the US as no one else has had the privilege.

The real drama in this race for us is, “Does Aregawi get the US all-comers record of 3:58.92 that convicted drug cheat Mary Slaney set in 1988 (the all-comers mark is the fastest time ever run on US soil)?” and ”Who gets second?” and “How do the Americans stack up?”

We’ll address the all-comers question at the end of this piece.

We’ll address “who gets second” and “how do the Americans stack up” now together as there are six women in the field with PRs in the 3:59-4:00 range including two Americans.

Ibtissam LAKHOUAD 3:59.35
Hellen OBIRI 3:59.68
Morgan UCENY 4:00.06
Nancy Jebet LANGAT 4:00.13
Shannon ROWBURY4:00.33
Kalkidan GEZAHEGNE 4:00.97

We’ll break down all six of their chances in order of their PRs.

Lakhhouad - The 32-year old Moroccan was fourth at the World Champs in 2011 and has gone sub-4 in two of the last three years. Last year, she was DNF in the Olympics. This year, she was DNF in Doha so we doubt she contends here.

Obiri - The 23-year old Kenyan will be making her individual 2013 debut in this race (she split a 2:02.8 at Penn Relays on the 4 x 800). Obiri enjoyed an incredible 2012 as she was the world indoor 3000 champion, ran 3:59.68 in Rome (when Aregawi ran her 3:56.54 pb) and was an Olympic finalist last year. Since Obiri didn’t run indoors, she’s probably not as sharp as she was last year when she ran 3:59 in Rome on May 31st. That’s a good thing for her long term (but maybe not here).

Morgan Uceny is looking to kick start her post-London comeback in New York
*More London 2012 Photos

Uceny - The 28-year old world #1 from 2011 is trying to bounce back after suffering the nearly unimaginable despair of falling at the 2011 world champs (where she was the favorite) and 2012 Olympics. She clearly wasn’t in shape a month ago in Iowa (4:17 at Drake on April 20) so there seems to be no reason to think she can contend for second here. The question is, “Does she take a big step forward so there is optimism that she can challenge for a Moscow spot when she returns to Iowa in a month for the US champs (June 19-23)?”

Langat - The 2008 Olympic champ of Kenya, who is 31, dominated the Penn Relays mile earlier this year (4:28.50 2nd was 4:38.06) and appears to be in better shape than she was in all of last year, when she only managed a 4:09.10 1,500. However, that’s not saying a whole lot as last year she wasn’t higher than seventh at any Diamond League event. That being said she is the Olympic champion and has a ton of talent.

Rowbury - The results on paper so far in 2013 don’t look good for Rowbury, the 2009 world championship bronze medalist. They show a 16:08 5k at Carlsbad and a 4:09 fourth place 1500 at Drake. However, she had food poisoning at Carlsbad and ran gutsy at Drake as she tried to go with Jenny Simpson and ended up losing out on a lot of cash as a result as she was sniped at the end in a race where third place paid $10,000.

At Drake, she finished well ahead of both Gabriele Anderson and Mary Cain and they’ve gone on to to run 4:05 and 4:04 respectively so we think Rowbury is in pretty good shape. There is a reason why she was sixth at the London Olympics after all.

Gezahegne – The 22-year old, who was world indoor champ in 2010 and fifth at the 2011 worlds outdoors, is on the comeback trail after not competing at all in 2012. Her comeback got off to a slow start at the road mile in Boston last month as she was only fifth there so we don’t expect her to be ready to contend for runner-up honors here.

Of the above six, none of them really jump out at you as a clear second to Aregawi. We guess we’d go with Obiri if forced to make a pick with Rowbury maybe as our second choice.

Can Brenda Martinez Approach 4:00?

Brenda Martinez Tearing it Up in 2013

There are two other Americans in the field who we think will do well. Brenda Martinez has been on fire so far this year, definitely the best American not named Jenny Simpson – and actually one could argue she’s been just as good as Simpson.

Already this year, Martinez has won the BAA road mile, run a solo 4:04.86 1500 at Mt. Sac, been on an American record 4X800 team and also run 1:59.59 800, which would be the 2013 world leader had the ReRun meet in San Diego had a curb on the track as that is the only sub-2 in the world on the year. Based on her 2013 campaign so far, she has to be considered the American to beat at this race. She’s been on fire. In her 4:04.86 at Mt. Sac she not only won by over 5 seconds, but she set a pr by over 2 seconds.

Let’s pause to realize that despite being on fire in 2013, Brenda’s pr is .26 slower than high schooler Mary Cain. That’s how good Cain was last weekend.

Former Yale runner Kate Grace played it a bit safer than Rowbury at Drake and ended up third and $10,000 richer thanks to her 4:08.24 pb. Grace has also won the US Road mile champs over Anderson and Rowbury this year as well. As a result, we think an Olympic ‘A’ time of sub 4:05.50 is well within her reach.

Former Villanova NCAA star Sheila Reid, who now runs for Canada, was the runner-up at Drake ahead of Grace and Rowbury and certainly could contend for top non-African born honors.

LRC Prediction: Aregawi obviously wins. We also say she gets the US all-comers record of 3:58.92.

Top American: We’ll say Martinez but if Grace and Rowbury end up as the #1 American we won’t be shocked. We’ll also go out on a limb and pick Martinez for runner-up overall. No one else stands out so we will be a homer and pick her for second. Can she get close to the 4:00 barrier?

As for Uceny, we’ve got our fingers crossed that she does well here. We know you aren’t supposed to cheer in the press box – but there aren’t two more deserving people of success this year than her and Julia Lucas in the 5000 as both suffered huge heartbreak last year.

The IAAF opener in Doha featured five of the top six from the 2012 Olympics and the surprise winner was 27-year old Lyda Chepkurui of Kenya. The non-Olympian got the victory in a new personal best of 9:13.75 (previous pb of 9:14.98) after a blistering last 1 km of 2:57.32 (last lap 67 low). Chepkurui, the 6th placer at the Kenyan Trials last year, will be New York and is the woman to beat.

<del>Lydiah</del> Lidya Chepkurui after the biggest win of her career

On paper there only seems to be one woman with a shot of beating her and that’s Doha runner-up and 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Sofia Assefa.

Assefa, the 25-year old Ethiopian national record holder, is really good at finishing second in Diamond League races. It’s something she’s done seven times since the start of 2011. How many wins does she have in that time frame on the DL circuit? One (although she did win the 2012 ISTAF Berlin meet as well).

She’s got a very good shot of getting victory #2 here though as this field isn’t nearly as deep up front as the one in Doha. If anyone besides Assefa or Chepkurui wins, we’d expect it to be one of two youngsters in Olympic fifth placer Etenesh Diro of Ethiopia or 2010 world junior champ Purity Kirui of Kenya.

Diro was 4th in Doha (9:17.78) on her 22nd second birthday whereas the 21-year old Kirui had a huge PB in Doha to lower her PB from 9:35.61 to 9:19.42 to finish sixth, but six seconds is a lot to make up in the span of two weeks.

Top American?

There are four American women in the field and all are in need of the coveted IAAF ‘A’ standard time of 9:43.00. 2010 NCAA champ and 2012 US Olympian Bridget Franek (formerly of Penn State) is the fastest of the four Americans for her career (9:29.53) and won the only steeple of the year she’s done (a 9:46.99 in Eugene). Considering that and that she made the 2011 World Champs team and 2012 Olympics, she has to be considered the one to beat.

Olympic Trials fourth placer Ashley Higginson (formerly of Princeton) has the best 2013 seasonal best as she won in Oxy last week in 9:45.83. Former UVA star Stephanie Garcia has lowered her 1500 pb from 4:17.01 to 4:14.47 this year and ran 9:50.79 in Puerto Rico last weekend after disappointing with a 10:07 at Stanford. Former Stanford runner Sara Hall, who turned 30 last month, has run 10:11 and 10:06 in her two steeples so far this year.

LRC Prediction: Assefa actually wins a DL event again and Franek is top American.

Quick Take #1: Can someone tell us how the sport is supposed to marketed to the masses when the names of the runners actually change from meet to meet or even at the same meet. In Doha, Chepkurui’s first name was listed as Lidya on the meet website but when the IAAF emailed out the official meet results to journalits her name was spelled Lydiah so we called her Lydiah in our Doha recap but it looks like she’s back to Lidya this week.
