It was day 1 of the 2 day media day for the 2013 NYC Half Marathon this Sunday in NYC.

Day 1 featured the three main American contenders running the New York Half, former World Champion Bernard Lagat, who will be making his half marathon debut, 4 time Olympian Abdi Abdirahman, and the second fastest American ever at the half-marathon Dathan Ritzenhein.

Our interview with Ritz is below. We’ll have highlights later tonight or on Friday but have embedded the interview below.

Ritz talks about how it was motivation not money that has him running this weekend’s NYC half instead of next weekend’s World Cross Country Championships, he talks about having nearly instant success with coach Alberto Salazar, and then having to rebuild things in 2011 up until his marathon PR last year at Chicago. Plus, he talks about his plans to run the World Track Championships in Moscow and then the Bank of Chicago Marathon marathon.

And Ritz even talks about the rivalry between his training partners Mo Farah and Galen Rupp and who is the favorite come Worlds.
