The Columbia last chance meet just got a lot more interesting.

Jerry Schumacher wants his men in a 5000 and it could be record-breaking.

LetsRun.com has learned that many of the top runners that train in Jerry Schumacher‘s Nike group in Portland – Andrew Bumbalough, Chris Derrick, Elliott Heath, Evan Jager, Lopez Lomong, and Matt Tegenkamp – are all planning on running the 5000 on Friday night at the Armory in New York City. Race time is scheduled for 8:55 pm.

Considering the names assembled and their current fitness (Andrew Bumbalough: 8:13 2-mile at Millrose, Chris Derrick: USA XC victory, Elliott Heath: 4th at USA XC, Evan Jager: 8:14 2 miles at Millrose, Lopez Lomong: 3:51.21 Millrose mile record, Matt Tegenkamp: 3rd at USA XC) as well as past 5000 meter success, (Bumbalough 13:16, Derrick 13:19, Heath 13:26, Jager 13:22 (from 2009), Lomong 13:11, Tegenkamp 12:58), it seems reasonable to ask, “Will the American record of 13:07.15 – which Benard Lagat set at last year’s Millrose Games – potentially be under assault?”

It seems possible – although someone needs to be pretty darn track sharp to do it. Thus if anyone was going to do it, we’d say Lopez Lomong is your best bet.

The primary goal of the race is not to get the American record. It’s being set up as a race for the guys to get the IAAF ‘A’ standard of 13:15.00 in the 5000 for the 2013 Moscow World Champs. Dan Huling and Travis Mahoney will pace and the goal is to go through 3000 in 7:55 (13:11.67 pace) so someone would have to ram it down from their to get the AR, particularly if the rabbit hits 7:55 and the field his 7:56-7.

The NYRR is helping kick-in and cover some of the travel costs for the runners.

LetsRun.com is going to try to be there to cover it for you.
