Marissa Williams of Palisades, Calif., and Benjamin Saarel of Salt Lake City, Utah, won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships (FLCCC) West Regional today.

In the girls’ race, Williams, a sophomore at Palisades High School, went out fast and continued to keep her pace throughout the race. A chase pack of runners, including Makena Morley of Bigfork, Mont., and Julia Maxwell of Ross, Calif., was about ten seconds behind Williams at the one-mile mark. Williams never relinquished the lead and went on to capture the title in 17:46. Maxwell, a junior at Branson High School, finished second in 18:15, with Morley, a sophomore at Bigfork High School, placing third in 18:17.

Benjamin Saarel Wins. Should an XC Race Finish on a Track?

A pack of runners dominated the boys’ race, with Zachary Perrin of Lakeside, Mont., in the lead at the one-mile and two-mile marks. At 2.5 miles, Saarel made his move to separate from a chase pack of runners, including Andrew Gardner of Spokane, Wash., John Lawson of Forest Knolls, Calif., and Troy Fraley of Kalispell, Mont. Saarel claimed the title in 15:28. Fraley placed second in 15:37, and Lawson placed third in 15:37. Gardner, who is now a three-time FLCCC National Finalist, placed fifth and Perrin finished in eighth, also qualifying for the National Finals in San Diego, Calif.
