I used to feel the same way until I had a year with a very long commute. I can't really answer your question well, except to assure you that your concern is unfounded.
Feeling the way you did but needing a break on my commute, I started with a non-fiction book. Then I got into fiction. I listened to many books that year but the best of all was Moby Dick; that book is so poetic that I now can't imagine reading it. All I can suggest is that you give it a try - you'll probably be surprised.
