It wasn't "kind of" a choke. It was a ridiculous choke. The race was supposed to be a coronation, not a competition.
Spiker had been ninth as a frosh. Bobby Lockhart (2001 FL runner-up) had been 23rd as a frosh.
Bairu, Tegenkamp and Solinsky went an easy 1-2-3 at an incredibly competitive Roy Griak earlier in the year.
Also on the bench were Matt Withrow, Stuart Eagon and Antony Ford.
They went out WAY too fast the first 1000 meters and all but Bairu slipped back from there.
