Help him do what? Wiggle out of the BS mess he got himself into as an ADULT?
I'm sorry, but there are few nonviolent crimes that I think should lead to your life bring ruined at 18. I'd rather give someone a chance and fail then put someone with the potential to do great things away then have them stuck on unemployment forever. Do you think the world is improved by having more people in jail. Because the facts say that isn't the case.
I agree with you. Non violent is the key here for me.
He deserves to be punished. He should be given a choice between these two:
- jail for about 6 months
- lengthy community service duties every weekend for 6 months, check in with parole officer daily for 6 months, and mandatory completion of high school or a GED
He didnt assault anybody, break into a home, carjack somebody, etc. He tried to steal a car sitting unattended with the keys in the ignition. Stupid, criminal, yes. But not as damaging to society as violent crime.
Nonviolent? I disagree.
He was setting himself up for extreme violence. Driving a stolen car can lead to a high speed police chase on public roads which endangers innocent drivers and their passengers, pedestrians near the road, and the police who are trying to arrest them.
When kids steal cars there is an opportunity for people to die.
So then you view drunk-driving as a violent crime?
