I remember hearing something completely opposite and ridiculous years back - runners are abusing healthcare because we get so many injuries and are in the doc's office for everything. That's retarded. I've treated 90% of my problems myself because I care enough to learn how to help myself. I know not everything is a trip to the doc. It's the chubbies out there that fuss over their problems that they've only brought on by their own stupid behavior. Enough burgers may actually kill them off.
Must be nice to live in such a black and white (and clueless) world. You think runners are less apt to utilize the health system just because most of us are thin and aerobically fit? Maybe you don't go to the doctor much but I know plenty of runners who do get treated for every little thing. They are just as prone to "moral hazard" as anyone else.
You sound young. Wait until you're older and it's not so easy to stay lean and dodge health problems just because you rev up your HR a bunch of times a week, and things like cancer screening and flu shots become more important no matter how superior you think you are.
