RE: Official 2017 Chicago Marathon Live Discussion Thread
Very impressive form from Rupp. The way he did it was reminiscent of the Trials where he was jogging with Meb, actually, bumping into him and drafting off of him, and then finally went way ahead with maybe 4 miles left. This time, the weather was better and he went hard. Kirui still would have beaten him if the miles had been mid 4:40s instead of low to mid 4:30s there. Of course, his personality and the shadiness of his coach and training regimen cast doubt on all of this but for today I am pleased that an American-born runner has won Chicago for the first time in 35 years. Rupp clearly can run a lot faster, given the talented guys he has beaten in his last three marathons, and I expect that Salazar will get him to a fast marathon next fall after running Boston, but the money in Boston, New York, and Chicago is always going to be tough to turn down.
