Texas HS Coach
RE: How much mileage do you think the average highschool team runs?
It is really low. You have to consider all the small schools out there in the USA. Or from communities that don't value XC.

I think typical is probably 25ish. Maybe an average of 4-5 miles per day for 5-6 days.

A team that does 50mpw over the summer will be very solid. Yes, I know that the top schools in my state are doing much more, but most kids on those teams are probably 50mpw athletes with a stud or two in the 60-70mpw range.

The whole "everyone in the top 15 is doing 70mpw" stuff is nonsense. A lot of it is reported or assumed mileage on the coach's part, so they're just taking a blind leap of faith that their guys are out hitting doubles or a couple of longer solo efforts each week.
Even if the coach witnesses 7 practices per week, it would require an average of 10 miles per effort for 70mpw to be confirmed.

Point being is that most coach's say the prescribed amount and highly likely an overestimate on what is actually happening.
