They should be doing tempos ans long intervals right up to maybe 2-3 weeks out from the end of season. Hell, your last workout (10 days out from a goal race) for the 3200m runners should be something like 5-6 x 1000m @ goal pace. Six weeks of sprint training is ridiculous.
