Maybe because not all doctors know everything there is to know about running related injuries? I don't know, but I would guess most sports medicine doctors spend more time on broken bones, torn acls and heat stroke than on how much mileage is good for you. Even Tim Noakes, an MD himself and professor of physiology and exercise science, says in "Lore of Running" that you shouldn't completely trust a doctor who isn't a runner.
