I always took it as the narrative having reached a point where the characters couldn't express themselves in words, so they turned to music. So the music is sort of highlighting the characters' (of perhaps the audience's) feelings. I could certainly be wrong about that though. If they sing the whole time it can sort of f*ck up the effect.
