umm a kid who only runs Aug-Nov will still pr each year. Lacrosse will keep him in shape and even advance his running fitness, though not as much as running. A kid could do nothing after Nov, just run xc, and still pr every year.

To the coach, have him build up slowly, especially in Aug and September. You're lucky in that CA has a longer season than most states. Let him know he'd have a lot of potential in distance/middle distance and maybe he'll enjoy pr'ing enough that he'll stick around for track. CA's demphasis on the indoor season doesn't really help there.
