Subject: RE: Olympic Marathon selection for Kenyan Athletes

I think that, when somebody speaks about who the athletes I coach are, there is some confusion.
I work directly with athletes in Kenya, that I follow directly. Only in this case I can say I'm really their coach.
The athletes always with me are Moses Mosop, Abel Kirui, Eric Ndiema (2:06:07), John Kiprotich (2:07:08), Robert Cheruiyot (2:05:52), David Barmasai (winner Dubai last year), these last two together with William Kiplagat, Jonathan Maiyo (2:04:56), Philemon Limo (59:30), Silas Kipruto (59:39), Nicholas Kemboi, Gilbert Kirwa (2:06:14), Boniface Kirui (first marathon in Hamburg), Sammy Kitwara, Florence Kiplagat for the road races, and Leonard Kosencha (1:44.08, World Youth Champion), Silas Kiplagat (3:29.27), Yusuf Kamel (3:31.36), Collins Cheboi (3:32.35), Caleb Ndiku (3:32.03 but I want to move him to 5000m), Remmy Limo (3:32.78), Edwin Soi (7:29.94 last week), Thomas Longosiwa (12:58 last week), Wilson Kiprop (World HM Champion but looking at 10000m), Sylvia Kibet (silver medal WCh in 5000m) plus some other athlete at the moment not so strong. These athletes are for the most part under the management of Gianni Demadonna and/or Global (Jos Hermens and Valentjin Trouw).
Then there is a group of athletes using my programs with their coach. Somebody is in Kenya (for example, one group of young athletes including Geoffrey Kirui (26:55) and his brother Gilbert Kirui (8:24 in steeple) and the World Junior Champion of Cross Faith Kipyegon Chepgnetich, that are in Kericho under the coach Charles Ngeno for the management of Global), some other in Ethiopia.
Between the Ethiopian, I have a close collaboration with Gemedu Degefu, following the marathon runners of Gianni Demadonna (Dino Sefer 2:04:50, Shami Abdullah 2:05:42, Chimsa 2:05:42, Seboka 2:06:17, Aselefech Mergia 2:19:31, Aberu Kebede 2:20:33, and others as Tirfi, Netsanet, Koren Yal, Yacob Jarso). We are in touch every 2 days, I have the full report of their workouts and the comments of Gemedu, and I prepare the program for the next period (my periods are never longer than 2 weeks, because I have to update the situation according to the reality, not to what I think in theory).
I have some athlete following my program directly, without the intervention of any other coach (Imane Merga).
And I have another group of athletes, managed by Jos Hermens and Valentjin Trouw with Global Communication, using my programs directly (Mekonnen Gebremedhin, Yenew Alamirew, Genzebe Dibaba, Abeba Arigawi) but alternating my programs with the programs of the National Coaches, since they have to join the national group for 2-3 days per week.
After this, there are program more general, used by other athletes of Global only partially (for example, they do some session that I write in the program, mixed with other type of workouts), and these athletes are not under my control, also if they use some specific workout I wrote not for them personally, but as type of training we can use for their event. This is the case of Bekele, and also of some very strong woman, but I can't say I work with them: simply, there is some circulation of my program and my training phylosophy that athletes can use according to their own feeling.
At the end, there is another group of Kenyan runners (mostly marathon runners) with whom I frequently speak about training, that some time ask advises and want to discuss about particulars of their training and how to improve their performances. These are the athletes "self coached" that follow my training system, as the most part of athletes in Iten.
Now I hope the situation is more clear.
I like to share my ideas and to discuss with everybody, but I can be considered the coach of the first group only. In all the other cases, I help some other coach in coaching his group, since I like to grow young coaches that are the continuity for Track and Field activity. They can learn from myself as I learnt from Luciano Gigliotti, but they are the coaches, not me.
