He wasn't brain dead. He suffered grievous injuries and cardiac arrest, but was not totally devoid of life.

Paul Melby, a 35 year old did qualify for his first Boston last May at the Lake Wobegon trail marathon in Minnesota. After crossing the finish line, he took a few steps then dropped dead from a heart attack. He could not be revived.
