Someone called you out on the phrase because usually in the English language when you say "this is his last chance," it implies he has not yet won one, and if he is going to, this is the last chance. This is simply not the best phrase to use in this situation. You defended your phrase with a technicality saying, your phrase technically means, it is just his final opportunity to win a gold medal. Someone extended your argument to say, no it is not his final opportunity because if we are going to get technical about the meaning of the word (as you did), he will have an opportunity, a chance, to get on the team and win a gold medal until the day he dies. You chose to defend your first poorly written statement with a technicality about the definition of the word "chance", so you can't flip flop now saying getting technical about the definition of the word is a bad argument.
