I don't think its the size of government it's effectiveness. The whole Denmark or Somalia question that comes up here from time to time get's raised in my mind.
yes effectiveness, 3.4 million federal workers would say they are over worked. the size and scope of our government is strangling new businesses and the middle class.
In some ways the state can make ppl more free. Just think of all those pesky labor standards and sanitation standards that improved quality of life for many people at the turn of the last century.
the state is the enemy of freedom. child labor laws don't make people free. sweatshop rules don't make people free. can we use a modern day example of our government legislating liberty?
A well though out single payer health care system would be less of a burden to businesses and would promote risk taking. My father had a few really innovative ideas to start his own auto business but we were dependent on his benefits when we were growing up so he never took the risk of leaving his corporate job.
why is there no single payer car insurance system? oh that's right it hasn't been legislated into one of the most regulated and controlled markets in the world. the employer based insurance can never work in today's job environment where there is no job loyalty.
A world class public education system (like we used to have) is tremendously empowering.
we have never had a world class education system and never will. the current crop of students are less prepared for the real world then the last. blame lies at everyone's feet but mostly incompetent teachers who don't teach but indoctrinate. test scores are down at the same time we are teaching test taking. the higher education system in this country is broken. the day universities realized the potential cash cows walking though the door you ended up with hundreds of useless majors and programs and the incorrect belief that every kid needs to go to college.
Our current system is a nanny state for the über poor and the über rich. With everyone in the middle footing the bill and getting very little to show for it.
i'm still at a loss for this type of thinking. if the top 50% of wage earners pay 98% of the tax bill how is that welfare? the top 1% pay 37% of the bill. would you like to set some arbitrary dollar amount where the government can steal other peoples money in the name of fairness?
government is a threat to liberty in every form whether a home owners association or town council all the way up to the fed. every day a state assembly is meeting you are losing freedom.
