Thanks! You're right - the 50m (long) pool record for 1500m is slower by about 24 seconds than the 25m (short) pool record.

Imagine you are in a 1.5 meter pool (a jacuzzi).
If you spread your arms and quickly touched each side, alternating rapidly, you could "swim" 1500m after making 1000 touches. Now, did your body actually travel 1500m? No! And so the turns actually do reduce the distance by some amount. It's self evident in my jacuzzi example.
